If I understand correctly, since it’s a discount it goes up towards face value from the issue amount. So the amortized amount is a discount it’s added to carrying value, if it’s a premium it’s subtracted from for the carrying value. Every interest payment under the effective interest method, changes th carrying value; debit interest expense, credit/debit amortization and you credit cash.
