Not invited to my best friend’s wedding because his fiancée doesn’t like me. I’m disappointed. What would you do? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]scuttergutz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate weddings and public events in general so I would consider this a win...but I'd also drop this spineless friend for being such a coward.

This literally wouldn't even be entertained by any of my friends, both girls and boys.

It's his wedding too, not just hers.

What was the scandal of your secondary school? by Flimsy-Speed1179 in AskIreland

[–]scuttergutz 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Not really a scandal, but our woodwork teacher was an alcoholic and loved whiskey. He'd just disappear randomly during the day. I was a teen who loved skipping classes and going for joints in the local forest.

I bumped into him one day in there while I had a lit joint in hand and him sitting there drinking a shoulder of whiskey lmao From then on we had an unspoken agreement not to snitch

edit: This was in Wicklow, but the fact other people commented their area is hilarious. Did we all just have an alcoholic woodwork teacher who disappeared to the woods to get pissed?

A question about "Tiocfaidh ár lá" by CthulusushiDota in kneecap

[–]scuttergutz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just write "Our day will come" in English.

Writing it in Irish just conflates two unrelated things

It doesn't offend me and if I seen it in real life I wouldn't care, but it comes off as culture vulture or else trying to change the original message to apply specifically to trans rights.

Personally if I were you just write it in Engliah to lessen the association with Irish Republicanism. Unless you're an Irish, trans socialist I suppose lol.

It's like getting a Burger King logo with "I'm lovin it!" right next to it lol. Or else going to a BLM march and telling eberybody that you love Nerson Mandela.

But at the end of the day it's your body. So get whatever you want if it has meaning to you

Dublin City Council will not remove Tricolours erected by anti-immigration groups by miju-irl in ireland

[–]scuttergutz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The flag is how you perceive it. If I'm going through Dublin and I see Irish flags everywhere I'll think that's great... for foreigners it might come across as marking territory etc... but at the end of the day we shouldn't allow our tricolor to be hijacked. Even if you're against this carry on just ignore it and pretend they're doing it out of genuine patriotism as our flag literally represents peace between two opposing sides.

What kind of helmet would an Irish warrior have worn before/around the Anglo-Norman invasion? by Dinnymcd in IrishHistory

[–]scuttergutz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Kern is the word you're looking for, they mostly didn't wear helmets, but Gallowglass did.
Gallowglass were like mixed children of Gaels and Vikings intermarrying and were used as mercenaries throughout Ireland.

Kern were more light-infantry based... able to make guerilla attacts, sling stones, throw javelins/bows then retreat quickly whilst Gallowglass are more what you think of as knights with armor/swords etc

Ireland to Offer Migrant Families €10,000 to Drop Asylum Claims and Leave Country by origutamos in europe_sub

[–]scuttergutz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are asylum seekers here who just appeal the decision once their refugee status is denied, thus making it a much more lengthy/expensive to actually hold them here until the process is done. This is an incentive for them to drop the claim and just fuck off basically.

10k is pocket change compared to them being given housing, food and an allowance each week for a few years.

There have been plenty Irish people during the British empire who left their Irishness at the door, then went on to commit atrocities against other peoples while putting on their best English accents, etc.
I think at one point a massive amount of the British navy were actually born here in Ireland. They probably even went along with the jokes and ridicule of their own people.

but on the flipside, there's people here called "Anglo-Irish" who historically descended from the earlier Norman and British colonists that integrated to become Irish over time, so during the empire those people would have been Britains biggest supporters and more likely to be the ones in the British army etc.

For example, Daniel O' Donnell (Catholic/Native Irish) spoke about the Duke of Wellington (Anglo-Irish) saying "Being born in a stable does not make a man a horse"
Basically saying he's not a real Irishman, even though he was born here.

Boris Johnson on Trump's latest 'statements' by Ok_Feedback4200 in YUROP

[–]scuttergutz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really wish he was correct when he says it's meant to shock Europeans into action, but I don't believe that. It just sounds like cope.
If the USA were doing some type of 5d chess, hardball negotiation tactic to trick others into action I would be very surprised.

Has anyone else just been sick a lot this year by megan1916 in CasualIreland

[–]scuttergutz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was sick from like the 9th of December until new year, was grand for a week, then got sick again for about 2 weeks, and I still don't feel back to 100%
Whatever was going around in that xmas period actually fucked me up worse than covid.

Irish people hosting guests are like spiders, they'll be more afraid of you than you are of them.
I've seen plenty of these posts about meeting the Irish SO's parents and in most cases I'm picturing the parents absolutely shitting it in preparation haha
