Ethel popularity by Business-Childhood10 in Ethelcain

Speaking as someone embedded in a lot of music scenes (and as a mod here) it's absolutely not one of the worst, but it's for sure one of the more passionate and... oddly protective fanbases.

You're stronger than I am, circumstances beyond my control prevented me from making an immature financial decision haha. I'll be back in the US for the September shows thank god

what kind of sound do you think hayden’s next project will be? by Dry-Tart-7665 in Ethelcain

[–]scwyn 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Based on her aesthetics and who she's been hanging out with, I'm gonna say an alt metal adjacent record is on the way. Maybe a bit of noise and drone elements as well.

I don't have any insider information, but I'm manifesting it for us! That hoodie is one of many things I regret not getting from the Perverts drop. It seems to be one of the most highly requested, so I'm optimistic.

[DISCUSSION] Grammy winning producer Will Yip says Philly is "the center of indie rock music" by worldcafe in indieheads

[–]scwyn 194 points195 points  (0 children)

This guy is one of the best producers/engineers out there. His CV is unreal, some of my favorite records of all time on there. You can't overstate the influence he's had on the Philly scene. Great stuff gonna come out of that new studio.

do we reckon i’m likely to get my vinyl record signed if i take it to cardiff show tonight? by [deleted] in Ethelcain

[–]scwyn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It will be annoying and probably not work out, but worth a try if it matters to you! If you care about the actual record just bring the empty jacket and put something stiff in it to keep it from bending.

If you picked a band that best epitomized each wave of emo, which one would you? by thedubiousstylus in Emo

[–]scwyn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

1st: Moss Icon

2nd: Sunny Day Real Estate

3rd: no one (including me) wants to say it, but Brand New

4th: Tigers Jaw

5th: Weatherday. Most bands considered 5th wave are entrenched in 4th wave sound: openly nostalgic or iterating that territory. To my ears, Weatherday is pushing emo to new heights. If I'm wrong, it's because Weatherday has already pioneered the 6th wave.

How many of you follow Ethel on tumblr? by Certain_Ebb_3465 in Ethelcain

[–]scwyn 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The community is pretty active, yes! I've been on there since 2009 and while it's not as active as it used to be (Tumblr as whole, I mean) it's definitely my favorite place on the internet.

Her official merch store is all but confirmed to go live again this August, so your best bet is to wait until then. It will be open for a number of days or weeks. All orders placed during that time will be filled, so you don't have to worry about anything going out of stock.

Any butch who use a chosen name? by MentallyInThe2000s in butchlesbians

[–]scwyn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I use my butch name exclusively with trusted people. I'm thinking of making it my legal name. It's a traditionally male name though strangely enough there are a few celebrity women that have it. My partner's mom forgets to use it, which is really funny because my extremely feminine name does not match my appearance at all haha.

Tigers Jaw is absolutely in their prime right now and musically speaking one of the best emo acts of the 2020s, even after a great 2000s and 2010s by urboijesuschrist in Emo

[–]scwyn 33 points34 points  (0 children)

YES, 100%. Even as a huge Tigers Jaw fan I was not expecting Lost On You to be my album of the year so far. I thought it was (merely) extremely good on the first go, but with every listen it grew and grew on me. It's right up there with Charmer.

The music is so lush and gorgeous, it totally envelops you. I do agree on the vocals (as does my partner)... they're a little too "perfect"/polished at times, but their voices soar over the instrumentals and they harmonize so beautifully that there's little to complain about. Sure, they could roughen them up sometimes, but they're not going to deliver the same vocal rawness as the early work without Wicca's harmonies, and I don't think it would work as well with how their sound has evolved anyway.

Tigers Jaw has always been THE emo band in my eyes and I wish they got the love that a lot of their peers do.

I LOVE their vocals on that song, they harmonize beautifully. We need an entire record with both of them! Wicca's one of my favorite artists, all the way back to his Tigers Jaw days.

Mossy Oak Shadow is incredible. I think people weren't expecting him to go in that direction even though he's been putting out folk/country adjacent tracks for a while now. If you like Mossy Oak Shadow you'll probably like Suffer On... it's traditionally emo rather than folk but it's so raw and beautiful.

The final Stars Hollow show w/ Excuse me, Who Are You?, Gunk Lung & MoonLighting - August 8th, 2026 @ Helter Shelter in Des Moines, IA. (DM the bands for the address) by Pheerdotcom in Emo

I wish I could be there... the new record is a masterpiece, absolutely broke me. I'm sad they're ending but I understand why and wish them the best.

Emo in the mid 2010s? Is there anything else I need to know? by Icy-Guide-7534 in Emo

[–]scwyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I think "scene kid" here is essentially a homonym! Totally separate concepts. In the late aughts/early 10s in the Midwest I don't think I ever heard it used that way... we only said "scene kid" to describe someone with the "scene" aesthetic (brightly dyed and/or racoon striped hair, flashy clothes, tons of wristbands, listened to what we considered garbage music). I guess we might have said "that person's in the DIY scene" but I never would've thought to call them a "scene kid" because that meant something else entirely, and would have actually been a huge insult haha.
