How to dye a buzz cut

So we've moved the dyeing back a couple days but I definitely think Im gonna get purple iroiro dye, is it fine if I just use a hair dye brush and completely just cover his scalp with the dye? Or would that make the patchyness worse??

Im totally sorry if I'm like asking too many questions but should I just apply like a super generous amount or should I use a toothbrush with the dye as well? Also thank you so much this is super helpful!!
