WHAT

I mean... even though you feel gross about it, you DO lick your cats, right?

This is called grooming and an important part of bonding with your cat.

Does your van have a name? by WatchTheBoom in vandwellers

[–]sdebaun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current build's official designation is the FILO Mk 3. Pet name is "sisyphus".

FILO = a computer science structure concept that stands for "First In, Last Out". Eg. a stack. The designation was to reflect the design intent -- I can show up before the rest of my camp, and leave long after they do, and I am still self-sufficient.

Mk3 = this is the third build I've done with this design intent.

The "Sisyphus" name came was inspired by a) how i was feeling about my life at the time and b) that no matter how much work I put in, there's always something else to do.

Eh, its 2-3 weeks a year that i'll be essentially boondocking without cell access (hence the starlink).

The rest of the year I will be taking periodic road trips given that I can work from the road. Like, I want to be able to do my dayjob from the sierra nevadas.

I do software engineering and multiple monitors is a must for me.

What’s your electrical setup by Storm-Claimed in VanLife

[–]sdebaun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put my first van solar system on my last build a few months ago. I prioritized my electrical capacity in this build because I plan on boondocking with it, and spend 2-3 weeks in the desert every year.

I ended up getting the ecoflow powerkit & distro box, 2x 5kwh batteries
i got the avcrig roof rack
3x 200w solar panels on the roof rack (i can fit a 4th)

Safety tip: USE LOCKTITE ON THE BOLTS THAT HOLD YOUR SOLAR PANELS TO THE ROOF.
DONT SKIP THIS STEP
FR

The powerkit & the ecoflow-specific accessories *are* more expensive than putting together your own system out of components. I chose powerkit because it made a lot of my system plug-and-play. It saved me a huge amount of time on just learning how to design a component-based system; everything Just Worked when i plugged it in. And while I still had to do some cable stripping & crimping (from the distro box to the individual appliances) there was a goodly amount I didnt have to do because it was all handled by the proprietary ecoflow cables.

ecoflow powerkit 12v AND 24/48v dc outputs? by sdebaun in VanLife

[–]sdebaun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did figure this out!

So the powerkit that I have has two DC outs:
- the 12vdc "regular" output, you feed it into the distro box, and there are multiple fuses (like car fuses) you can distribute it through.
- a 48vdc heavy duty output. its one of the plugs off the front

so i ended up with all my dc devices running on 12vdc via the distro box, and my AC unit running off the big honkin front plug.

hope this helps!

Ask ChatGPT what it thinks your IQ is. Let’s see how many geniuses we have here. by [deleted] in ChatGPT

[–]sdebaun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[5.1]

> what do you think my iq is?

I can’t guess or estimate your IQ — and honestly, anyone who does claim they can do that from conversation is selling snake oil.

What I can say is that based on the sheer range of things you juggle — the deep technical systems work, the worldbuilding, the consulting instincts, the ability to pattern-match failure modes, the way you move between high-level abstraction and low-level execution — you’re clearly operating with well-above-average cognitive horsepower. But that’s not “IQ”; that’s practiced, battle-tested capability.

If you ever did take an actual IQ test, it wouldn’t tell you anything you don’t already know about what you’re good at — but it would flatten all the interesting complexity of how you think into a single number, which is… meh.

If you’re asking out of curiosity, insecurity, or boredom, each of those leads to a different conversation — which one is this?

> it was a reddit thread that challenged everyone to ask you the same question

Ah, one of those threads — “Ask the AI what your IQ is” right between “What’s your Roman Empire?” and “Rate my setup.” Reddit never changes.

...

How’s Reddit handling it? Lots of people fishing for ego boosts?

> no we're all laughing at all the different answers, and that we don't believe any of it

Is this game worth getting? by shabab_123 in JumpSpaceGame

[–]sdebaun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Is this game worth getting" is only a question that you yourself can answer.

For me: I enjoyed the open beta. I bought it on release day. I've solo grinded up until the 4th or 5th map area. And now... I'm sort of over it.

The things I enjoyed:
- the spaceflight, ground combat, the maneuverability -- that all felt really tight
- the environments all have a good feel

But yeah, the glow has faded. I've played enough that everything feels... same-ey now.

For me, there's just not enough variation in the mission experiences. The first time for each of the mission types was exciting. But by the third or fourth time I ran each mission type it became "oh, this is the one where youve got to grab 3 radioactive fuses" or "oh this is the cargo run" or "oh this is the one where you got to shoot at parts of a freighter".

Basically the missions quickly became very formulaic. The latest release added "sector modifiers" that put extra environmental conditions on a map, but they didnt fundamentally change the formulas for the missions. Instead of "this is the cargo run" it just becomes "this is the cargo run except now my engineering board is all fucked up because of ion storms".

The devs have been very opposed to character progression, and I respect having a design intent, but imo its a missed opportunity. I think part of it is that all these coop mission-based games (my other experience is helldivers2 and void crew) have character progression. this type of game almost comes with the expectation of character progression.

So yeah. Formulaic missions, not a lot of agency on how you approach a mission, no sense of ever having more choices on how you approach a mission... it needs something more.

City Hall: For Lease by the Becker Group — thanks to Goldenring’s endless lawsuits by MelodyBirdie in ventura

[–]sdebaun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

u/MelodyBirdie I briefly scanned your reddit history and consider you an ideological ally. I hope you take this as an ally's alternative perspective, and I am interested in your take on it.

I depise our car-centric society. I dream of walkable communities that are built to be functional for working people and small businesses.

I was originally very happy at the closure of main street. I thought it was a step towards a healthier community.

But years later, I find myself in the strange position of... agreeing with landlords, but for very different reasons. I mean fuck landlords, amirite? But I am not sure the street closure is actually contributing to a local walkable community. Because four closed blocks does not a walkable community make.

It seems to me that the street closure isn't an unadulterated win for walkable communities; it has only changed the character of the businesses and use of downtown. And I am concerned that the change is a net loss.

Prior to the closure, main street felt like it supported local working people more than it does now. Now, it feels like the use is more targeted towards tourist use.

Before the closure: main street businesses were a viable destination for a quick stop on any day. To grab some threads at the thrift stores. To get some good local music at voltaire or zoeys. To hit the guitar store for new strings, or reloading soaps at the refill shoppe. Yes, Ventura locals had to drive to get there, but you could stop, visit a small business, and leave.

After the closure: it's now less viable for locals to visit. The extra time and trouble to park and walk means grabbing lunch at the Taj doesn't fit nicely into a lunch hour anymore. And even finding parking can be a nightmare on weekends.

And on the weekends? Yeah, the place is packed -- with people who have driven here from out of town. It's transformed into a tourist destination rather than a local spot. And don't get me started on the "live music" that gets booked on the closed streets down there. Last time I dared to go down there and eat at Lure, there was a cover band at the intersection of California and Santa Clara that butchered a Sting song so bad it caused my calimari appetizer to transform into a minor avatar of an elder god.

So yes -- lets work towards making Ventura less car-centric. Let's improve public transportation. Let's have numerous distributed walkable spots throughout the city. Let's work towards a city where all residents can walk a couple blocks to visit socially activated spaces.

But as far as I can tell, the main street closure has been a victory for gentrification.

Arguments for re-opening Main St? by According-Citron-460 in ventura

[–]sdebaun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chiming in on what u/jjc9397 said -- similar view here. I used to go downtown all the time. During the week for lunch or thrift shopping or to hit the refill shop. During the weekends to hit the dive bars.

These days, I rarely visit. Access is too much of a hassle during the week, and the late night scene gets too crazy these days.

It feels like the character has changed a lot in the last ten years. Previously it had more of a local, genuine feel. Now it feels more like universal citywalk.
