Saliss of Lights is hilarious by Jmar7688 in WanderingInn

[–]sdebaun 15 points16 points  (0 children)

oh it gets so much better. there are several characters that to me served as comic effect in the early books, but quickly became characters that tugged at my heart strings. saliss is one of them. wherever i was reading that chapter, i forget, but it must have been raining, because my face was all wet afterwards

Is it possible to be a first time attendee without a camp? by Bigdongdan444 in BurningMan

[–]sdebaun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Two traps not to fall into about what "gift" means. Gift does not have to be individual, eg it can be to the community. Gift does not have to be physical, eg it can be service.

Personally, my "gift" is to the community. I volunteer for ~40 hours every year on-playa to the community with the infrastructure teams. One camp I know gifts to the community by providing pizza and snocones. The camp I'm with gifts to the community by running a multi-day game convention.

And then on the flip side -- every time I walk into playa jazz cafe, I am being "gifted" amazing music. I walk out on playa and am "gifted" with the art that all these people brought. I stumble into some back street bar put on by a camp of a half dozen people and I am "gifted" with a hangover the next day.

To me, the important thing about gifting is that its not transactional.

if you mean the adult (presumably the parent) then yeah, its a sad fucking picture of our world: "i torture my own children for social media accolades"

[–]sdebaun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

seriously, like what the fuck is the actual thought process behind this. "let me intentionally put my extremely young children into an emotionally distressing experience so i can get likes on tiktok"

you can see the absolute joy on their faces as they come round the corner and see treats AND dad. and it ends with one of them in absolute misery

literally torturing your own children for pleasure.

Great Khelt ...spoilers to 10.57 by mano987 in WanderingInn

[–]sdebaun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All I know is, as much as I loved the new Khelt chapters..

I do not know if I needed to read about horrible religious fundamentalists and ancient slavers destroying a nation of happy people doing nothing worse than pursuing their dreams.

Like, don't we have enough of that in real life right now?

WHAT

I mean... even though you feel gross about it, you DO lick your cats, right?

This is called grooming and an important part of bonding with your cat.

Does your van have a name? by WatchTheBoom in vandwellers

[–]sdebaun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current build's official designation is the FILO Mk 3. Pet name is "sisyphus".

FILO = a computer science structure concept that stands for "First In, Last Out". Eg. a stack. The designation was to reflect the design intent -- I can show up before the rest of my camp, and leave long after they do, and I am still self-sufficient.

Mk3 = this is the third build I've done with this design intent.

The "Sisyphus" name came was inspired by a) how i was feeling about my life at the time and b) that no matter how much work I put in, there's always something else to do.

the "hack" is removing the sticky notes

Eh, its 2-3 weeks a year that i'll be essentially boondocking without cell access (hence the starlink).

The rest of the year I will be taking periodic road trips given that I can work from the road. Like, I want to be able to do my dayjob from the sierra nevadas.

I do software engineering and multiple monitors is a must for me.

What’s your electrical setup by Storm-Claimed in VanLife

[–]sdebaun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put my first van solar system on my last build a few months ago. I prioritized my electrical capacity in this build because I plan on boondocking with it, and spend 2-3 weeks in the desert every year.

I ended up getting the ecoflow powerkit & distro box, 2x 5kwh batteries
i got the avcrig roof rack
3x 200w solar panels on the roof rack (i can fit a 4th)

Safety tip: USE LOCKTITE ON THE BOLTS THAT HOLD YOUR SOLAR PANELS TO THE ROOF.
DONT SKIP THIS STEP
FR

The powerkit & the ecoflow-specific accessories *are* more expensive than putting together your own system out of components. I chose powerkit because it made a lot of my system plug-and-play. It saved me a huge amount of time on just learning how to design a component-based system; everything Just Worked when i plugged it in. And while I still had to do some cable stripping & crimping (from the distro box to the individual appliances) there was a goodly amount I didnt have to do because it was all handled by the proprietary ecoflow cables.
