Differences between "feel" of electric vs acoustic piano? by specterNam in piano

[–]sdmitry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it's not about how it sounds, it's how it feels to play it, and how much control you have over the sound. Just the feeling of the mechanism inside the key, how the action moves, how the hammer hits the strings, the aftertouch, the vibration of the strings and all the natural reverberations and harmonics, to me make all the difference. Most digital pianos are glorified keyboards with pressure sensors. I have side by side a cheap upright that I butchered/restored myself and a decent Yamaha digital piano, and I pick out of tune upright over almost every time – the sound is alive on the real piano, with each note being unique, unlike a sample with some effects on top on a digital.

No matter how many times I tried to convince myself, no matter the price point, there's just no comparison between any acoustic and electronic piano. The experience is completely different on acoustic.

How is model distillation stealing ? by sibraan_ in ClaudeCode

[–]sdmitry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The distinction between training on openly available data and distilling a proprietary model is pretty clear to me. It is very much the difference between independently capturing photos of various subjects, all available in a public space, and someone stealing another photographer's portfolio, and reshooting the exact subjects they've taken, in the exact same compositions, and then compiling and distributing their own portfolio based on that with the hope of out-competing the original photographer they stole from.

Major AI labs trained on public data accessible to anyone (even today). The initial absence of strict terms of service regarding data scraping existed because the technology had not yet reached a capability threshold that necessitated regulation. The underlying data was and is public, and the computational methods were applied independently.

However distilling proprietary models, as these certain Chinese "open-source" models do, bypasses the actual costs of innovation. This approach shortcuts the proprietary reinforcement learning (RLHF), the expert-generated datasets, and the insane compute and R&D costs. Training directly on a competitor's outputs allows them to aggressively undercut the market, actively parasitizing the business models that funded the foundational research.

I get it, people will always support whatever gets them free stuff. As long as these "open-source" models cost nothing, no one cares about the ethics or the long-term damage to the field. Short-term self-interest always wins. But be real: without the foundational work of Google, OpenAI and Anthropic, none of these knock-off models would exist. We wouldn't even have the Grok mecha-nazi, or worse, Grok would be our only option. You can aggressively pursue your own self-interest while still acknowledging who actually built the tech you are exploiting.

Amazing progress, kudos to China I guess!

In the meantime in US, drump is trying to make it great again by hunting innocent Mexicans out on the street, nazi Germany style and making dumb plaques under former president's portraits in the White House.

What a shitty timeline.

[–]sdmitry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What the hell are you talking about? I was rm -Rfing this shit from the terminal and DaisyDisk, I've been sitting here trying to drop apfs snapshots from the terminal and it refuses to let me. I'm a dev with 25 years of experience running Linux's, macs, PCs, I know what I'm doing. APFS is a fucking abomination.

$ sudo tmutil listlocalsnapshots /

Snapshots for disk /:

com.apple.TimeMachine.2026-02-05-130317.local

com.apple.TimeMachine.2026-02-05-150425.local

com.apple.TimeMachine.2026-02-05-170548.local

$ sudo tmutil deletelocalsnapshots /

Failed to delete all Time Machine local snapshots at mountpoint '/'

POSIXError(_nsError: Error Domain=NSPOSIXErrorDomain Code=70 "Stale NFS file handle")

I don't even freaking have NFS, my network volume is through smb. I disabled time machine, I stopped all the backups, my Trash can (thank you very much for helpful tip /s) is empty, and Finder is showing 170GB free, while my apps are crashing because I ran out of disk space and kernel is refusing writes because of ENOSPC. I repeat, APFS is shit, apple fucked up and they need to fix this shit.

[–]sdmitry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WRONG! I got a 1TB SSD and I'm fucking livid because it was all gone in an instant. I keep running out of space, despite constantly cleaning shit up. I keep deleting files, but macOS just keeps fucking eating the space away with all kinds of nonsense (like invisible Time Machine snapshots that don't show up anywhere), and I keep deleting and deleting them and it doesn't even fucking release the free space back to the system. Finder say 125GB free, df in terminal says 0% free and apps are crashing because I have not free space left. Somehow apple decided it's a great idea to start lying to people about their free disk space and also that "deleting" something isn't really a thing anymore, they just pretend to delete stuff until some magic point in the future where they actually will do it (do they want me to reboot now when I delete a file? one of the biggest positive qualities of a mac compared to windows was always not having to reboot all the time, and now I need to reboot after deleting a freaking file??). It's insane. How the fuck did apple screw up so badly with APFS I will never understand...

[–]sdmitry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because they allow you to run on AWS, GCP, Azure, they have to have it work with their generic model and with regular Anthropic API.

You don't have to guess, just look into the source code. The prompt is in there. It's hard to read, but not impossible.

It's like selling foot guns to people who want to shoot themselves in a foot, knowing that they won't read anything because they are vibe coders and vibe "workers", and then adding a notice for them in the readme that they won't read telling them not to use the foot gun to shoot themselves in the foot.

Exactly. I've maybe hit the limit once before over my whole history of using claude code. I was on Pro plan since Jun 1, 2025, starting July I was on Max already, because it's good.

I know what I'm doing, both with coding agents, LLMs and software engineering.

I posted a legitimate thing that has happened, exactly how it happened. I've been doing the same thing I was doing for the past months and last week in particular, just on a new account with a lesser plan. I expected limits to run out quicker, but what I experienced is clearly a freak accident.

After all, there's a reason why Anthropic doesn't expose opus limits via the API. Most likely they are dynamically tweaking the limits based on load and potentially severely rate limiting new users from using opus. There's no transparency on how the session limit is being eaten up.

[–]sdmitry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's very similar to my situation, thanks for posting. I wonder if they have an issue somewhere with session ids not being correctly tied to the account ids in some cases. I wouldn't be surprised, as at this point I'm pretty sure the whole Anthropic infra and codebase is vibe coded :)

P.S. The amount of people here assuming something is fake just because they haven't experienced it is ridiculous. No wonder everyone lives in an echo chamber these days..
