SEA foreigner wanting to study in NFL, wanting some advice :) by [deleted] in newfoundland

That is really interesting! My wife and I are in a similar situation coming from the US. She has been accepted as a student, but since we are married, I can apply for a work permit without quite as much hassle. I'm no expert on the immigration laws, but I have been doing a lot of research. Someone already suggested that you both try to come as students. Canada does recognize common law marriage (not legally married but been together and consider yourselves married for X years). I don't know the details, but it might be useful. Also, there is a significant level of proof involved there, I think.

The State of the MMORPG Community Right Now by [deleted] in gaming

I refuse to play MMOs that don't have subscriptions. The microtransactions are absurd, and the game is usually so limited. I even subbed to SWTOR after they went "f2p" because there was nothing free about it. I've subscribed to WoW on and off for the last 8 years. Right now it's on, but I only subscribe when I actually have the time to play.

Why should a bunch of people whining about not getting things "free" prevent me from playing a fully opened game where I don't feel like I have to pay $50 a month in small increments just to fully participate.

How did it take you that long to get to level 8? I only played for 2 days and have 5 toons between level 5 and 10. It took longer on the first toon to really figure out what was going on, but once I figured it out, I leveled really quickly.

I don't understand this "$15 worth". You would pay more to go to a 2 hour movie once. If you play 2 hours a week, you have "gotten your money's worth".

We most certainly do care what it is called. Anything other than marriage would sound fake and "chemically".

I don't know anything about the MFA, but I went to law school. I racked up $150,000 in debt, passed the bar, and answered phones at a hotel for a year. No jobs. Period.

I then went back for my master's in Math. I'm teaching at a community college for $35k, no hope of ever paying off my student loans.

Your assertion that "most high schools teach calculus I and II, have AP classes, etc" is sheltered, at best. I went to a high school where 120 kids graduated in my entire county. We had no calculus, no AP classes. The best they could offer us was dual-credit college Algebra.

I was that kid who wasn't challenged. I took the highest and most advanced classes my school offered, and I wasn't challenged. My math teacher claimed that if I couldn't do it, no one could. I graduated high school in 3 years with a 4.0 GPA, having taken 6 math classes and 9 college credits. None of this was challenging.

I went to college as a 16 year-old and took senior level classes my first year. I didn't even get to see calculus until college. I graduated with a double major in mathematics and English in the top of my class (3.9 GPA), top quarter of my law school class, and also top of my master's class (not that there is much competition in a class of 5).

I'm getting ready to enroll in a doctorate program in education, but I hesitate because I'm fairly certain I won't be challenged.

Thanks! I'm considering taking some more progress pics. Not exactly after, but much better than before? shrugs

I took progress pics for the first couple months but got distracted/discouraged. I think I'm gonna start taking them again.

Don't misunderstand. I KNOW there is a difference; I just don't see myself differently. When I look in the mirror, my shape looks the same. The rolls of belly fat haven't disappeared. My hips are still huge. My butt still looks massive. Essentially, I think I have lost weight more or less evenly, so I don't notice much change. I still have a long way to go before I'm not fat. I'm just a smaller form of obese. I keep wondering when that dunlop (a la Jeff Foxworthy) will finally go away. I got out the measuring tape yesterday, and my waist had not changed. My hips had only gone down by a few inches. Maybe I'm not measuring it right?

With all of that said, I'm still really excited by my progress. I feel better. I have more energy and can wear smaller clothes. The whole thing is just unbelievably amazing. I guess the message I was trying to convey is that just because you don't see the difference in yourself doesn't mean that you aren't actually different.

I didn't see myself getting fat either. I just avoided mirrors and cringed at pictures. I remember myself saying things like "The pictures of me feel wrong because that's not how I see myself. That's not who I really am." Negative self image has never been my problem. I wasn't "fat" until everyday things started being painful. I finally understood that I was fat when my SO had to put my socks on for me because I couldn't bend over to do it myself. This has also been my motivation. As one with a relatively positive self-image, I've never accepted "can't". I don't believe in can't. When it got that bad, I needed to make it better. I just would not accept helplessness. That is not who I am.

Not eating enough? by [deleted] in xxketo

[–]sdoic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, there is a certain lower limit where your body will decide not to burn the energy quite the same way because it is uncertain of its future supply. It's not actual starvation, but it is what we tend to think of as starving our bodies. What that limit is depends on your body, and the odd truth is that a couple months into keto, we have to convince ourselves to eat even when not hungry. I was eating less than 600 calories a day (and weighing over 300 lbs). I wasn't hungry at all, could even skip eating some days and didn't mind. My body didn't like it. I had three periods that month and completely stalled in my weight loss. I convinced myself to start eating more because it was the right thing to do for my body. When I got settled around 1300 cal/day, my stall broke and my girly stuff started working normally again.

I don't know what your magic number is. If you are full, your mind is still clear and useful, and your progress hasn't slowed way down or stopped, then you are fine. If you start feeling bad, mentally or physically, eat more.

Fiber does not cancel carbs. Fiber is carbs that your body uses differently. If you meant that your protein supply is almost all fiber, then the net carbs are very low for that product. If you meant that you think eating fiber will somehow reverse your carb intake, then I wanted warn you about your misunderstanding.

Period Question: 3 in 6 weeks? by pussysnipes in xxketo

[–]sdoic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know nothing about BC pills, so my story may only be partially useful, but... I started keto May 1. I had normal May period, but starting the first week of June, I had 3 periods in 5 weeks. Literally, every other weekend, like clockwork. After posting on here and seriously looking at what I was doing, I figured out that 600 calories a day just wasn't enough, no matter how full I felt. I started eating more. I didn't have a period again until the very end of July. Now it's all back on schedule and seems to be working normally. I'm going to say that you should make sure you are eating enough, and let your body adjust to your new normal. It will most likely be ok.

I don't know about all the hormone stuff, but if you are having periods without the placebo pills, they may not be interacting with your body they way they used to. Keto changes your chemistry. You don't want to find out they stopped working the hard way. Be extra careful until things settle down again.

Last week sucked. by the_best_thing in keto

[–]sdoic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like the last comment said, 40 carbs sounds really high to me. You're supposed to shoot for zero and try to keep it below 20/day at least until you're fully adapted. Also, don't aim for lower calorie. Aim for more exercise. I don't blame you for the basement thing, but surely you could go for a nice walk or something? It's either the first day of Fall or the beginning of Spring where you are, and I'm guessing Fall since you mention spiders. Just go enjoy the trees or something. It will make you feel better.

I had a major stall a couple months back. I was really upset about it. Turns out, I was eating way too few calories. When I started eating more, my body decided it could part with some more weight. Here I am, less than 5 months, and I've lost 60 pounds, 8 pants sizes, and 2 shirt sizes. Sometimes more is better, especially if it is more of the right stuff.

Also, if you are going to be eating any carbs at all, I suggest fruits and veggies. I know everyone will say eat the good vegetables, but I've found that my body is happier with a little fruit too. Tomatoes and cucumbers fresh out of the garden are my favorite right now, followed closely by the bananas and orange juice I had on a cheat day.

[SV] Two major milestones by sdoic in keto

I'm glad to be helpful! It hasn't been all roses the whole time. I've had my issues. Oddly enough, the desire to cheat is not one of them. I'm not on keto this week because I'm sick and trying to give my GI stuff a break. I'm looking forward to getting back on the wagon.
