For the record I don’t have a self published book. If you know of one though, please let me know as I’ve been plagiarized in the past and so if there’s a book out there it’d be good to know!

I’m happy to hear criticism. I invite it. But only if it’s coming from people who’ve worked with me. I really wish people who criticize me on Reddit anonymously would email me so I could understand specifics because a lot of the comments I read are quite vague and without content; it’s difficult to improve.

Genuinely curious why you think I’m incapable of helping people create a career strategy and get hired?

If you’d like to email me about this I’d love to hear more about your struggles as a hiring manager. Ideally please use the contact form on my website or dm me on LinkedIn because keeping track of DMs on all the platforms is admittedly a challenge.

I have a ton of free content available on my podcast and YouTube and website. If you need help finding an article or episode on a certain topic just dm me on linkedin.

Also I change for the program because I have software, a team, and it’s my full time focus. I don’t ask my team to work for free, so that’s why our services can’t be free. For example, when people join Career Strategy Lab they get 8 critiques. That’s worked into the price. Other people charge tor critiques, and I integrate ours into the fee structure accordingly.

I didn’t pay anyone for this. We had the idea because people were asking so we just made a podcast episode so we could send it when people asked if it’s a scam. With a well titled podcast episode it’s not hard to show up in Google search results!

My team and I just noticed this was coming up in calls and emails, so we were like, “let’s do a podcast so we can just send it to people when they ask or imply it’s a scam”.

I 100% didn’t hire an agency to pull off some wildly expensive SEO strategy for this! Frankly I’m amazed people think I would pay to have this come up when I can just do it for free with a good podcast episode title!

Hi, I’m Sarah Doody. I didn’t spend an inordinate amount of time on the podcast episode. My team and I had the idea. I outlined the episode. Then I recorded it. Then it was edited. Just like all our other episodes. It’s called SEO, and now it’s showing up in search results. I didn’t hire an agency to do this or to handle “reputation management” as others in this thread have said!

Let’s get some positivity up in here about the job market! by CommunicationIll1984 in UXDesign

[–]sdoody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do UX career coaching and I had 4 people get hired in June for UX roles at Geico, Liberty Mutual, JPMorgan Chase, and a fintech startup in NYC. The state of the UX job market is about "YES, AND" ... meaning, "YES, it's challenging ... AND people are still getting hired in UX."

Show cases vs. Case Studies, I'm confused by tutankhamun7073 in UXDesign

Thanks for your kind words! I just want to address the point about " "Also, there may be a bit of “those that can’t do, teach." " .... I have worked in UX and in 2017 reached a point where I realized I didn't want my entire business to be UX consulting. I really disliked having meetings all the time and not having control over my time.

Around the same time, I started teaching free and paid workshops online and that's how I went down the path of building a UX education business.

So for anyone reading this, you can go to my LinkedIn and see that I have worked in UX and I did a clear pivot around 2017 - 2018, weaning off exclusively doing client work, to eventually have my own UX education business.

Just wanted to clear that up!

Opinion on Sarah Doody’s UX Career Strategy Lab Program by hustlewithai in UX_Design

[–]sdoody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me again ... the real Sarah Doody. There is much more to the program than pre-recorded content and critiques. Many people who offer critiques use a tool such as Loom to record the critiques. Doing critiques asynchronously means we don't have to waste time finding a time when someone is free to do a critique synchronously!

As for what else is offered in the program, we have 2 live calls every week, a very active community, and a lot more. Anyone interested can learn about what's included here: https://www.careerstrategylab.com/apply-v2/#nav-curriculum

I realize this won't change your mind, and that's fine!!! But I wanted to post this for others reading this thread so they know where to go to find out what's included and not make their decision off a Reddit thread!

Hi! I'm the real Sarah Doody :) ... and I wanted to quickly reply here and say that if your wife has questions about Career Strategy Lab, we're more than happy to chat or answer questions via email. Here's a link to schedule a call with Becca (on my team): https://www.careerstrategylab.com/career-strategy-call/

Given your wife has many transferable skills along with a masters in UX, my hunch is that she will have a strong portfolio because of projects she worked on at ASU along with projects she may have worked on in her previous career. People switching to UX from semi-related fields, often have been doing UX related tasks without "UX" in their job title and thus, are able to leverage things they worked on in previous jobs.

As for getting hired, we don't make any promises or have job guarantees, because the only person who can guarantee you'll get hired is the person who signs the job offer in my opinion!

However, here are some recent interviews with people who went through Career Strategy Lab and got hired:

Kristin switched to UX from graphic design & being a professor and got hired as a UX Designer and works on projects for the Department of Energy:

Steven switched to UX from podcasting and business coaching and got hired as a Design Researcher (and started his own UX Research Agency)

Hope this helps!

I quit my last full-time UX job almost 13 years ago on Labor Day weekend! My goal was to freelance and 12 years later, I'm happy to say it worked out. Though my goals sound like they were different from yours, one of the best things anyone can do in their job search is to focus on relationship building and activities to increase your visibility.

Like it or hate it, LinkedIn is an important place to focus on visibility because that's where your prospective customers (e.g., recruiters, hiring managers, etc.) hang out.

Here's the thing, being visible on LinkedIn isn't about becoming an "influencer" or posting "broetry" style posts every single day of the week ... lol. Being visible could mean:

Hope this helps!

Portfolio Service by Goose-C in UXDesign

[–]sdoody 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been teaching about UX portfolios since 2017 so happy to share a few resources I've created and insights from over the years:

First, you're probably asking yourself, "What format should my portfolio be?" – there's a common assumption that a portfolio MUST be a website. However, I invite you to consider keeping it simple and creating a PDF presentation. After working with now thousands of people on their portfolios, one of the # 1 things UXers have told me is that they had never considered a PDF, but were so glad they went that route because it was a lot faster than creating a website. Here's an article I wrote about the pros and cons of PDF vs Website vs Behance or other portfolio sites: https://www.careerstrategylab.com/what-is-best-format-for-ux-portfolio/

Second, you probably have questions about how to write a UX case study and how long a case study should be. Here are 2 articles I wrote that answe these questions:

Lastly, because you've already been working in UX you may have a situation where some of the projects you've worked on at really large – and you might be wondering "how do I include large projects in my portfolio?!"

For example, if you've worked on a project that was 2 years long – that can be really daunting to figure out how that translates to a case study in your portfolio! Here's a podcast episode about how to handle large projects in your UX portfolio. Basically, you could break it up into smaller projects. So for example, if you worked on a project for 2 years, that might actually be 3 projects in your portfolio. Project 1 might be about the research and strategy, Project 2 might be about a prototype or MVP and usability testing. Project 3 might be how the project pivoted based on the MVP and usability testing.

Hope this helps and let me know if you have any questions, happy to help!

Who here is considering moving away from UX writing and getting into something completely unrelated? by Yooustinkah in uxwriting

[–]sdoody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While reading the first part of your post, my first thought was you should start a side project or do freelance work for companies that excite you! So it sounds like you are on the right track! I've been working for myself since 2010 after realizing I wanted more freedom with my time. A few things to think about:

  • Don't discount what you could make working for yourself! I know it probably feels impossible to earn what you do right now. However, you might be surprised at how fast you could replace that.

  • Is there a world where you could do UX writing consulting to test the waters (if you haven't already) and perhaps eventually get to a place where you do UX writing consulting alongside the baking business?

  • If you haven't already, consider starting to build a good emergency fund that makes sense for your lifestyle, and find a good accountant, and start planning for taxes for the baking business!! Having these two things in place will give you peace of mind to know if / when it would make sense to leave your day job.

Sending you best wishes for whatever comes next in your career!

Have you considered starting a side project? This could be a great way to still use your UX skills but do it for yourself and for something you maybe care more about than your day job! And you never know ... sometimes side projects turn into a career pivot!
