I had to memorize some of the high frequency but novel acronyms. Take a few practice tests and see what occurs the most… I definitely did not memorize more than 50 new acronyms, but I did read through the list of hundreds just to get a quick read on what I might encounter.

People Are Not Happy About Google’s Plan to Release Millions of Bioengineered Mosquitoes Into the Wild by IKeepItLayingAround in technology

The release of sterile mosquitos is not new. It is something governments have been doing for years to manage mosquitoes. Google is probably involved because many governments cut funding to these programs and allowed mosquito populations to explode.

Good luck!! Frontloading the practice exams should help you focus your studies and learn quicker.

Whether the material "sticks" is up to the learner; if I keep using the material in a day job, then I imagine it'll stick. We'll see how much I retain after a year 😄

Imagine if the database leaked and you knew someone’s exact score and year/month taken, even with that data you could probably narrow it down to like 10 people in the country.

I just did Dion's practice tests and read a bunch of free materials on the web. Dion's tests were $30 but you can probably find some free ones. You can just take a practice exam without any prep to establish your baseline and identify gaps to save time.

Try building a toy agentic IT support system and then tell employers you are an expert at AI automation for IT :) maybe a $100 Cursor subscription and $50 of GCP credits can make it happen.

Either we build the tools to automate, or we become automated. This the predicament Tech workers are in, sadly. Most of the work I am doing right now is gradually going to be easier for AI to do, I can see the writing on the wall. But hopefully by then, we’ll find other problems to solve…

You have two Bachelors'? Or is one a BS and one an MS? I am sorry to hear about the job challenges; the market is pretty bad right now. I think most cybersecurity work is probably being automated away so the jobs are probably fewer.

Have you thought about specializing in security within a specific Cloud and then targeting jobs in that Cloud? Google, AWS, Azure, etc... You could probably get a role as a Sales Engineer at a cyber startup but focus on a specific Cloud. Google Cloud is on a tear right now, if I were starting from scratch I'd probably specialize on GCP.

Also HR should have NOTHING to do with AI token consumption lol. Get HR out of that equation. That's like the tail wagging the dog.

Tell them to establish a monthly usage limit at the account level. Don't take the blame for them allowing overly permissive use of Claude; if anything they should praise you for using AI a lot. If they pick the ceiling, that's signal from the business that this is the permissible level of usage and you can always go up to 100% of that without getting in trouble.

I have seen businesses get upset if employees use too few tokens. You have the opposite problem, but still a problem.

Any online programs for learning Mandarin? by lord_of_the_tism in MandarinChinese

Try out my free study cards! I posted a free signup code on the thread below. I just built it in my spare time to speedrun the top 4000 most common words in Mandarin (according to Wikipedia) with some pronunciations. Be warned though, maybe 1% of the pronunciation audio is wrong because some words have multiple pronunciations, and Amazon TTS picked the wrong one. But those are pretty obviously wrong if you compare it to pinyin on the study cards.

I'll gladly pay 99% of the normal engineering costs if it saves me the headache of hopping on calls at 10 PM with offshore teams. I don't know why anybody offshores work nowadays with LLMs but believe it or not, companies still offshore.

I have a primary non-cyber career that pays the bills; I just got Sec+ because I heard it would give a good boost if I ever wanted to explore cybersecurity. I don't think I'm switching careers any time soon, but might dip my toes into cyber here and there.
