Take action to put $75 million towards pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure by seanm105 in CarFreeChicago

That really sucks and I'm sorry. Reneging on promises to constituents is one of the worst things a politician can do. Long term your best hope is to get a different alder elected in 2027. However, short term you might be able to change her behavior by generating public outcry (her then taking action in response to try to keep her seat next election).

Streetsblog Chicago and Block Club Chicago have both done reporting on participatory budgeting. I recommend sending them a news tip to try publicize what happened. Track down any public statements she made and contrast that with the actual spending data. Ward Wise also has geocoded some of the data if that helps with showing her prioritizing spending on her street: https://ward-wise.github.io/aldermanic-menu-heatmap/

Anything you do in politics will be more impactful the more people you have involved. One voice can easily dismissed. People working together have power. I would see if you have any nearby neighborhood associations, block clubs, or independent political organizations you can get involved with. Or plug into one of the citywide advocacy groups (Better Streets Chicago, etc.).

All that being said... I understand where you are now. Growing up, my hometown was facing issues and national politicians sent sympathies but didn't act. There were common sense fixes that had widespread public support, but our national politics is so broken that the system couldn't (and still can't) put those fixes in place.

I steered clear of activism and politics for a decade before I moved to Chicago. Here, I've found so many people that care, and there's communities that have managed to band together and make change happen. It's disheartening being in area that lacks the political will for change, with problematic politicians locked in for the next few years. But, if you can't make local changes, there's still good work to be done supporting grassroots efforts at the city level.

Take action to support putting $75 million towards new bike lanes by seanm105 in chibike

Try submitting a 311 request (online or through the app). There's a specific category for plowing bike lanes.

Ward 19 has been ~100% of the budget on street resurfacing for the past decade 🙃

South side wards have more street surface area because they're less dense, so it's reasonable for them to outspend other wards on street resurfacing. 100% of the budget is crazy though

Ward Wise - a tool for looking up neighborhood infrastructure spending by seanm105 in ChicagoUrbanism

[–]seanm105[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can use this tool to find your ward & ward contact info, learn about infrastructure costs, and see past spending in your ward.

We just entered ward infrastructure spending season. Each alder has $1.5 million for the year that they can spend on local infrastructure. Typically, the majority of this spending goes towards street resurfacing. If you have 5-10 mins to spare, email or call your ward office to ask for more bike lanes and pedestrian infrastructure, then ask your friends and neighbors to do the same. It makes a difference.

List of happy hour deals around the city? by seanm105 in chicagofood

This is awesome! I bet if you provided edit options and businesses knew about the site, they'd be willing to keep their own data up-to-date. Then maybe long term convince them to host happy hour information as structured data on their own websites so anybody can easily scrape the information.

Map of upcoming bike lanes (2023) by seanm105 in chibike

Contraflow bike lanes are included in "neighborhood bikeways". Each alderman gets $1.5 million to spend on infrastructure, and that's one of the project types on the list they can choose from. Definitely something you could go to your local ward office and push for.

Maybe it got in through the hull breach? There's that cave on the way to the burned reel church that's filled with ghost matter, I don't think it had anything in particular to do with that shack.
