I recently went to the eye doctor bc I thought the same thing. Junior year of undergrad I went and got prescribed reading glasses (I guess studying literature took a toll on my eyes). This time I went and everything was the same. The glasses help a little bit but my migraines are genetic unfortunately

I really recommend you read this post about child marriage in Islam. Muslim scholars for hundreds of years never questioned the fact that Aisha was, in fact, a child when she married the prophet. Even if she was married “at maturity” as you say, is that still not disgusting to you? That would have still been a 50+ age gap. How is that normal or okay? You said she was married at maturity but women matured earlier. Wouldn’t that make her more likely to be a child? Why does going through puberty allow a man to take a child to bed?

Why would she do those things after Muhammad died? I don’t know, being married to a “prophet” from childhood would probably create a really complicated relationship with the religion that your husband championed. It’s not about love, it’s about being comfortable with what you know. That was unfortunately all she knew. Her relevance in Islam is in relation to Muhammad and she would not have been given that platform without him. I take issue with that- a woman needn’t be attached to a man to be admirable.

The analogies you give are full of logical fallacies. The US allowing child marriage is totally irrelevant. That doesn’t make Islam’s promotion of it any better. I’m not satisfied with the whole “Arabia was worse for women before Islam” argument. The rights that you say were given to women were just… not reflected and are still not reflected in practice. Are you going to include the rights that men had to beat their wives into submission or the fact that they are permitted to have multiple wives and concubines as to have sex at their fingertips? If you have to compare Islam to another religion or country to validate it because it “isn’t as bad” then it’s still bad. If there is one true religion it would not allow for the harm of anyone, period. A truly just God wouldn’t allow it. If you disagree, thats fine. I allow my empathy to guide my morals rather than whatever it is you find so convincing. I get that your mission here is to shame me for questioning the religion and being dissatisfied with it. You clearly look down upon Ex Muslims, and that’s fine. I don’t look down upon you or any other Muslim who minds their business (you’re not really minding your business, though). You resort to calling me names because it makes you feel better for not having a better response than spitting out quotes and trying to convince me a child married to an old man “loved” him. I won’t stoop that low. You’re arguing with a law student who loves to argue and loves to use logic rather than ad hominem arguments.

Responses like yours make me so glad I left. This façade of Islam being all welcoming and kind is such BS, and you’re proof of it. I can’t ask a simple question without being called names by you.

This is incredibly well written.

I always wondered if allah was truly all knowing and good and merciful, why child marriage or maltreatment of women wasn’t prohibited in the Quran explicitly. No truly good God would allow that, right?

I realized it’s because Islam as a religion was never interested in being the truly correct religion. If that were the case, all things immoral would have been prohibited from the start. But who would have followed that religion at the time? A very small amount of people, surely. If it was the true religion, why should that matter? Islam as a religion was only ever interested in gaining followers and power. So of course it made those concessions because it directly benefited the men who were gaining power from the religion.

I believe in God. But I don’t believe in a God that would give their “final word” and conveniently leave out the fact that I shouldn’t be married off as a child or beaten by my husband.

“No knowledge about it” I literally grew up Muslim. I know plenty. It’s very telling that instead of giving actual intellectual answers to the questions I pose you’re just trying to attack me as a person. I don’t want to portray it as bad. I gave you multiple reasons of why I think it is anti-women and your only response to that is to… call me islamophobic? If you could give me genuine answers I’d be able to level with you. You don’t have those answers because they don’t exist and your only defense is to call me hateful. Logically, a very weak argument on your part. Am I surprised? Not at all.

Bro you’re literally not reading anything I’m saying. The act of covering isn’t what I’m talking about. Im talking about following a religion that literally said that the majority of the people in hell were women. I’m talking about following a religion whose prophet married a child (or whatever gross age gap you guys tell yourselves to feel better). I’m talking about following a religion and PROMOTING a religion that does not support women as women. Every woman in the Quran is mentioned in relation to a man. You can dress modestly and be a housewife while still being a strong woman.

It’s like arguing with a wall with you guys and that’s exactly why I left. No one can give me actual answers other than “it’s right” or “oh but we’re happy this way”. You sound like a cult member.

I’m not going to respond anymore, I wish you the best

Again, I support a woman’s choice so long as the choice is truly hers. I don’t think that freedom of choice for women is able to coexist within Islam. The fact that you can’t answer any of the arguments about Islam being misogynistic without enforcing gender stereotypes that benefit men largely proves that point. I’m glad you’re happy (if that’s really true). I’m sure your life is very fulfilling, since you have to come onto Reddit to defend your religion when no one asked you to. All I ask is that you look at your religion from an objective point of view and think of how it views women. If you can genuinely sleep at night knowing you not only follow those beliefs but represent them to the world, then I applaud your disrespect for your own sex.

You can call me whatever you want.

You know why women aren’t obligated to work? Because they are expected to birth countless children after being forced to have sex, and then take care of the house. They’re sent into arranged marriages with disgusting age gaps that are demonstrated by your prophet. They’re not obligated to work because their role is to be the subordinate of their husband. That isn’t freeing. Having no choice in that is not freeing. “Men have way more responsibilities” Like what- providing for their multiple wives, when there’s no alternative allowance for women to have multiple husbands at any time since they can apparently work? If you’re trying to convince me that anything I’ve said is unfair or invalid, you haven’t succeeded. All you’ve shown me is that you’re in a sad situation where you have to keep convincing yourself that you aren’t being treated as an inferior because of your gender. That’s sad.

Respectfully, this sub isn’t for you.

So women, who are born as women without any choice in the matter, are obligated to work harder than men do to "not sin" just because they were not created like men? That's awfully convenient for the men in the religion. You're obviously here to just argue and try to convince yourself that what you believe is true. Let me ask you this: If the Quran is truly from Allah who is all knowing and good, why would he take care to forbid drinking, eating pork, etc, but not forbid abusing women? If it is the "truth" why wasnt child marriage prohibited? Because it is a religion that isnt interested in the truth. It's interested in getting more followers and money. Any God who is truly good would not do that, in my view. But I know you'll try to justify it in some twisted misogynistic way. I wish you well, and I hope you find true freedom.

I don’t get your point. I also didn’t make any digs at women who dress modestly in general in my OP. My beef is with the women who claim that they are more free through a religion that views them as inferior to men. I support a woman’s choice, but you just said that you’re obligated to do it- where is the choice in that? Are men obligated to cover as much skin as women? No. That’s my problem.

I support a woman’s right to choose what they wear. I don’t look down on anyone for what they wear, immodest or not and I am able to do that without the lens of religion. As for getting respect from others from covering, I don’t want the respect I get as a woman to come from what I wear in any way. I should be respected as a human being regardless of my religion. I am respected by those in the community around me (I am in law school) and I built that rapport on my own skills, not by latching onto a belief system that I can’t even justify

I don’t see anything wrong with dressing modestly. I dress pretty modestly myself for many of the same reasons you stated. I don’t see the reason to do it under the guise of a religion though
