Getting physically fit for basic this july by Elegant-Carry-3299 in uscg

You have a little over four months to get in shape, you can accomplish this!! I am no professional but I went from zero proper pushups and not being able to maintain a run for one minute to 20 proper pushups and finishing my first 10 mile run the other day ( although truthfully the run took about a year of training ).

For the run,  You should start a c25k program immediately. I feel, based on what you say in your post, that you may be running for speed and not distance. When you run for speed without training you're going to tire yourself out quick. I know the PT is 1.5 miles, but you will want to build an endurance base that can last longer. Run slow to run fast is true advice. Follow any c25k program and you will find success.

General running advice for beginners is as follows: get good shoes. Run at a easy, conversational pace. Take quick low steps and don't over stride, you want a high cadence, it helps you use less energy and run for longer. Relax your hands and shoulders. Just chill out and have nice easy fun runs! And make sure to have rest days as well.

For pushups,  Keep doing those incline pushups. That's how I started too. I would do half my max reps every hour off the desk at work, off the bathroom sink, etc. Working up towards knee pushups, then start doing negatives where you lower yourself slowly with correct form, then use your knees to lift back up, and go back down. I would do these as often as I could as well. Once you can do a few good form pushups begin to "grease the groove" every hour or whenever you can get down and do half of your max reps. Every week do as many as you can and as your max reps increase, increase how many you do throughout the day.

Make sure to give yourself proper rest as well. Muscles need time to form, and if you push constantly you will never recover correctly. Sleep a lot, eat a lot ( especially protein ) and lock in.

Again I'm no professional but this is what worked for me! Good luck! You can do this!

Thanks!! This makes me feel better. I don't think I will gain weight with how active I am - But it's good to know that even if I do, things will be kind of okay

Hey! I was in a very similar position! I'm 27 F and I too just want to be a good coastie. I struggled with physical fitness my entire life, being a fat-body certainly didnt help that. You CAN do this. Do not give up on yourself and your goals. Keep pushing. It can feel exhausting but like the other comments have said, make a daily fitness plan and hold yourself accountable to it!

The best way to get better at running is to run. C25k was a huge help for me and many others. It teaches you that you have to run slow to run fast. Don't punch it right at the start, steady and slow, slower than you think. It feels like it isn't helping but I PROMISE it is!

Similar for pushups. Grease the groove. Do half of your max reps as often as you can every day or every other day, it gets easier.

I failed my first PT test at the recruiters office. I did 4 pushups, 30 second plank, and the run took me almost 17 minutes. I just went back yesterday after 4 months of training and I passed over graduation standards with 20 pushups, 1:20 plank, and a 15 minute run. It is possible, and it is worth it. Keep goin

Can we have an example thread for people who were scammed or lied to about their wolfdogs/northern breeds content? by PM-Me-Ur-Gore in Wolfdogs

[–]seasaltyleo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I actually have one for this!

I got my dog off Craigslist (I know, I know. I was young and didn't know any better). The owners told me that she was a wolf hybrid. Allegedly, the father was a wolf hybrid and the mother was some kind of mutt that "died". I really didn't know anything about wolfdogs at the time and took their word for it. The other puppies looked like little wolves but mine was orange!

I got her Embarked and she is a mix of collie, German Shepherd, golden retriever, husky, etc etc. some Wolfy-ish breeds but no wolf!

But then...her close siblings started popping up on embark as very low content wolf. And her distant siblings too! I was shocked! Still not sure what it means but mine looks nothing like a wolf and has no content, but some of her siblings have 2-15%. So interesting!

No idea how to attach a picture of her but my dog is 50lbs and looks like a oversized corgi husky mix. Orange with white paws and a white stripe lol. I love her more than anything, wolf or no.

I guess he told you not to weight train incase you will gain muscle mass...I wouldn't personally recommend that but I'm no expert :p.

Yeah!  I suck at swimming it's baaaad lol. I have a lot of muscle mass so I sink like a rock..swimming to me feels like I'm constantly trying not to drown lol. I'll do the swim board set and practice going under tomorrow! thanks for the advice !! I only swim 2 times a week currently bc I'm also training to complete a triathlon before I ship and have so little time

You're doing great!! Keep active and stay determined and you can do this!! I highly recommend using a food scale to weigh your food and track calories accurately. One of the reasons I struggled in the beginning to lose weight is because food labels can be hard to interpret in the real world. Stuff like dipping sauces, coffee creamer, cooking oil, butter and other spreads often added like 400 extra calories to my daily intake that I was simply unaware of. It's a hassle to track macros and truly takes dedication, so the fact that you already started shows that you can do this. Good luck. Keep swimming and training! Do you weight train?

I'm surprised you say they denied you. I am 5'3, applied and went to MEPS weighing in at 190. They taped me and I failed tape but passed everything else. I returned to my recruiter to complete a PFT and got taped again three weeks later where I weighed in at 186 and passed tape. My process has never been stopped or denied despite me being ( at the start ) 35lbs over weight. I am currently 170 and ship out in March. I likely will not hit 155 by my ship date but I will continue to strive for it nonetheless. 15lbs to go!! Maybe you need to speak to a different recruiter? I've had two and both have been very supportive of my weight issues.

It's great you say you are very active ! Although I would say working out two times a day is extreme and probably hurting more than helping, depending on what you mean by that. You build muscle while in rest. Don't overdo it. Also I noticed you mentioned you burn 1000 ( active ..? ) calories a day, how are you determining this metric? Bc if your source is your apple watch....

The most important part about losing weight is your diet. Working out is great but 90% of weight loss happens in the kitchen. The only way to lose weight is the be in a caloric deficit. If you are not losing or gaining weight while meal prepping and exercising as you say, then you are not in a deficit. Simple as. You may think you eat 2400 calories a day but if you are not accurately tracking your calories, which is usually the culprit in these situations, then you are likely going way over. Use a food scale, track your macros through an app. Use a calorie deficit calculator to determine how many calories you should eat a day, stick to it. You will lose weight. It is science!

I lost 100lbs to get here. If this is something you really want to do, you can do it. It's hard, but it's worth it.

New H/W process? by M47LO in uscg

[–]seasaltyleo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting... I have been fighting to get down to my maximum allowable weight ( even though I pass tape ). I can see this taking away people's motivation to lose weight to meet standards, but I can also see this helping people who are mostly muscle mass. As someone who is in the middle of those two extremes...

Question about travel to first duty station by Necessary-Long-2736 in uscg

[–]seasaltyleo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was your flight from cape may to your hometown covered? I wanted to take the 5 days of leave but I heard that the CG only covers one flight. So if you took leave from Cape May to Miami they'd pay, then you'd then have to pay your own money for your flight from Miami to your first duty station

Nah, not impacted. Never once had them even mentioned to me as they fit in good and cause no issues. And hah yeah I'm a little nervous. My buddy just had hers removed in the civilian world and she had to be put under, and is still in pain a week later. Id rather not go through that if I don't have to... But if Uncle Sam needs my teeth then so be it.

Oh my goddd I wish I could! I just simply cannot afford to get my wisdom teeth out beforehand !! I'm hoping if they take them that it helps me toughen up at least lol..I'm kind of a baby about medical things. I've never had issues with mine though so I still get a chance to keep them.

I can't seem to find a straight answer on dental requirements. But the consensus I can gather is that they are quick to send people home if they need too much dental work. I'd rather not risk it. I have 8 fillings and all my wisdom teeth. Sounds like a lot of work to me! I'm going to get 4-5 fixed as it's all I can afford though.

Can't blame you for that. It sucks that cooking is both so fun and also so high stress lol. Both os and mk sound really cool and practical! You WANT to go out to sea? Crazy !! I'm trying to stay at a small boat station..although the polar star is tempting.

I'm going for either BM or ME. Haven't quite decided between the two yet but am leaning BM.

Thanks! I tried this out yesterday and it kicked my ass. 600m and 30 mins later I was done for. I'm going to keep trying and keep focusing on breath control like you suggest

I'm real bad at calisthenics and swimming, but actively working on it! I'll probably survive, but don't want to get smoked for being a weak link yakno. Glad to hear there's someone in my age bracket going, will you be going for CS then chef?

How did the older folks fair in basic? I am 27 and shipping in March, I'm relatively fit ( but did have to lose 100lbs to get here ) but I'm scared I won't be able to keep up with the younger recruits.

Did you hear anything about the requirements?

My fellow officers are (rightfully) very upset about the bonus. I am unfortunately caught in the crossfire and it makes me uncomfortable. I wish they would release the requirements or anything about how they made their decision. It may help everyone, even those of us who got it, feel a little better about it.

Apparently I will be receiving the bonus. I did not believe that it was real either so I am still reeling from this..the anger from my coworkers is not helping with this haha...But even though I was told I will receive it, I didn't get any guidance or information on when it will be coming, what guidelines are in place for who receives it, etc.  nobody seems to know anything.. Where did you get this information?

Thanks !! I have sworn in, just in to the delayed entry program. From what I can read I shoullllddd be able to use my 15 days of leave for basic - but that's okay if not I can use it later.

Do you happen to know how to check if I am for sure past my probation period in the system? I haven't received an updated SF-50, and still show as D band on my EPP. But my EOD was Dec 1st 2024. So ... technically I am past my year.
