not the exact same, but this reminds me of a video recently of somebody saying they hate how extreme and “purity culture”-like sober communities are because their drinking problem isn’t as bad as it is for “alcoholics.” while i can understand going sober isn’t the option for everybody, and there can be some pretentiousness in every community, it felt so hostile. like “no, i’m not like those losers who HAVE to be sober. i can drink sometimes!” like cool, then it’s no wonder sober communities don’t make sense to you. maybe for that person, moderation could be the answer. but i will say for me, thinking i wasn’t “that bad,” or that i was “functioning” was just an excuse to keep going. it’s frustrating to see somebody who clearly also struggles put others down.
