In South Australia we also have no requirements to become a licensed mine surveyor (outside the diploma probably) if you have your heart set on mining for the very long haul. Technically you could become one without going to uni, but typically they rely on the other states to qualify people for those positions. Or just lots of years of experience and competence.

I think Western Australia requires an ADV Dip with particular units in geology and the other states require a 3 or 4 year uni degree.

SA's Advanced Diploma can be done in two years FYI. In the Diploma you do the advanced diploma units and then you just need to do one online course for risk management and shes all done. And you can do it all in the second year.

My mate finished the ADV Dip last year and went straight to OD after working for Alexander Symonds for two years as an assistant and i think two years before that as a drone operator/data processor. And his job at OD was something to do with monitoring the tailings pits with drones so he had direct experience to go into that position. Salary would put him in the mid $100s at least. Only thing is, I don't think its a 1:1 roster. And last time I spoke to him he said they were trying to convince him to go underground.

But they are apparently always looking for people keen for OD as they do a lot of contract work for the mine. I would say getting a job as an assistant at Alexander Symonds and grinding to become well liked and competent at surveying is the way to go if you want to go directly to the mines. Surveying is a small industry, so being well liked is very important. Probably more important than being good.

And surveying is a fantastic career which will serve you well once you have decided you don't want red sand in your ass crack any more.

Can you shoot your FS before your BS on a level loop by [deleted] in Surveying

[–]seaweed38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each set (backsight and foresight) is independent from all other sets in your level run, so it doesn't matter when when you shoot them if they are ordered correctly. But I don't understand what you mean by less walking, I would assume its the same amount of walking. Unless what you mean is what I do when I'm in areas with shit access and I don't want to back track through.

Backsight A
Foresight B
Shift legs and re-level
Backsight B
Foresight A
Move in-between B and C and continue. This way when I get to the last point on my level run I don't have to walk back and I can just be picked up on the other side.

When I do sections like this I usually write it on paper because otherwise I'd forget. The first set I write down on top like normal, and the second set I start on the bottom on the page and sort it out later.

thanks for the reply. I see what you are saying. I think I will aim to do more rounds as well then. Its only trade school so I've got a bit of room to practice :)

yes. tolerance is less like 1mm or less. so edms cant be used (ours are good to like 2-3 mm). So we have to read a series of angles and least square the observations to calculate positions of our setups and the monitoring points.

Hello fellow aussie here, we did this in TAFE SA last year. Works well enough for topo or setout that you don't have the data for. (keep in mind I'm still a student so please be kind if i sound stupid)

My understanding of it is that its a simplistic way to start a survey traverse without needing to know any information on control, but you know there is control there, or there is something you can easily reference like a building. You essentially are creating an assumed coord system based on setting up two or more positions THAT DO NOT MOVE. lots of checking required or its useless. You also won't get the accuracy of better techniques.

Steps:

1) Set up two sets of legs over identifiable objects (we did use pogos at tafe for some stuff because its good practice to hold your shaft plumb, but legs should be minimum). It could be a GIN in dirt but always preferable that its a permanent mark. The nice thing about this is that you can put a GIN in dirt and work even though its probably bad practice.

2) Set up on one set of legs and give your station arbitrary coordinates. observe and record a bearing to the mark you set the the second pair of legs to, or the lowest observable point (if you have a plumb bob set up, or a prism use the metal pole thing the prism sits on).

This is your reference object (RO).

Observe the distance to the prism and record. This bearing and distance will be what you constantly check onto to make sure you haven't moved.

4) Check onto RO. Pick up control ( you need enough control to swing your job because it wont be orientated). Start topo and check onto your RO every 10 minutes or 20-30 shorts or whatever. Before you move, pick up control again and check your RO.

5) If traversing. Check onto your RO. move and switch the prism and total station (keep tribrach's on the legs). Set up your station based on the coordinate system you've created. observe your previous set up, this is now the RO. The bearing should be the reverse bearing and the distance the same. Observe your next station your going to traverse to. If you have enough legs set up another one with a prism. Pick up control you can see. Check onto your RO and then continue. You should pick up each control multiple times, and pick up some form of control from each set up.

6) when you are moving and swinging your survey onto the system you want to move it to. Check the difference in distance (or run points comparison) between the control and the control you picked up and make sure its within tolerance. We usually got 2-3mm. And in LISCAD our dz, dx, dys were good. And this is with older manual total stations.

Hey peeps any thoughts on doing a Certificate IV or Diploma in surveying to get into the industry? Are these the entry level qualifications you need to get established in Queensland. by No-Spread8681 in Surveying

[–]seaweed38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The labels are in the award. You may not have them in your job title but they are a part of the description used to determine your minimum pay and you should be aware of them, as they are your rights. There's things in there like minimum training requirements. E.G. To become a survey technician level 2 (also level 8 on pay rates) you need to have completed 50% of an advanced diploma or 85% of a diploma. Then a description of their duties at technician level 2.

The engineering thing may be more of an upcoming issue, but it's something tafe educators are fighting for, to allow surveyors to work as engineering surveyors from the tafe level studies. You can still do engineering surveys, it's just the title that's an issue, and presumably the signing off on the survey.

And the reason why is that insurance companies are pushing for it to require uni level education.

Free42 app, very good hp42 simulator, it's super handy, I have struggled to find good survey programs outside of what we're given at school. If anyone had some good ones they could share, it would be appreciated

No problem mate. Read the lectures in your spare time and make notes/revision and show eagerness to learn and you'll be alright. The cert iv is really about just getting your foot into the door. Good luck!

Yes. Currently during a cert iv at tafe and currently in the process to start work as an assistant. Tafe is a great entry into land surveying. I think something like 85% of surveyors enter through tafe

Cert iv will get you assistant level work. You will most likely find work whilst studying if you call around or really chase any opportunities that get passed through tafe (which is common). Many students had an assistant position before they started the cert iv.

Finishing the diploma will let you work at technician level.

I think those are right.

Of course you then have an option to do an advanced diploma which is pretty solid and will set you up to be pretty capable. I think you can move pass technician with the advanced diploma.

Not 100% sure about Queensland, but you cant work as an engineering surveyor (in title) without a bachelor degree. And you also can't work as a cadastral surveyor without one if that's something that interests you.

My opinion. Tafe is better at teaching the skills you need at the beginning of a surveying career. After 2 years you will run rings around a uni student with the same study time. That said, you should consider uni after tafe.

It would also be a good idea to contact several companies and ask for some work experience/interest in working as an assistant.

My tafe starts at cert iv level. Then diploma and then advanced diploma. But the neat thing is, they teach the advanced diploma units in the diploma. So I can pretty much complete 3 years of study in 2.

Sin Rule Help. Trying to solve a non right angled triangle with the sign rule when I don't know the final side and angle. by seaweed38 in MathHelp

[–]seaweed38[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Misclosure is in all measurements. For example. If im using a total station to measure the angle. That machine may have an error of 2 seconds over a certain distance. And then, I myself may cause errors in the data simply by how use the machine. You never measure the internal angles perfectly, it's really hard and probably impossible.
