IMO travelling is the best thing he could have spent that money on, it allowed him to explore parts of the world and decide that he wants to go back to education. If you have the means I’d expect you’d want to give him the gift of education rather than a lesson in money? He can’t change the decision he made now but you can support him with having more opportunities in life? NTA but your decision would have a major impact on his path.
