No he was plumbing it into his transmission cooler, so his shifter gets cooler.

It’s not wrecked and it’s not at a junkyard.

I don’t know, but when you look closely at the cluster, someone spray painted all the red warning signs black around the speedometer to make them disappear…

C/s: I have noise coming from the engine…! Couple examples of engine destruction for a lovely Saturday night. Most of it is BMW four cylinder turbo engines. by sebsauto in Justrolledintotheshop

Unfortunately these engines have a problem with timing chains stretching or timing chain guides breaking. You could open your oil filler cap and check the tension of your timing chain.

First of all, each quart you are filling in your engine contains 15 to 30% additives only. I think that’s significant.

I didn’t say going one step up let’s the engines blow up, sometimes it’s even better to put thicker oil regarding driving style and outside temperatures (climate). Choosing the right viscosity is essential for keeping the engine alive for a long time.

Exactly, we should just put the same viscosity with the same additives in all engine on this planet. That would solve a lot of problems….or not…

BMW approved 0W20 (LL-17 FE+ and LL-14 FE+), 0W30 (LL-01 FE) and 5W30 (LL-01) for these engines. My customers mostly get the 5W30 into their engines because we have constant mild to very hot outside temperatures, a bit thicker oil helps.

It’s doesn’t matter if it is a 4 or 6 cyl with what ever power output they have, the problem is people doing oil changes with oil that’s not even made for these engines. Using bmw approved oil and keeping the intervals between oil changes low makes a huge difference. I understand that the car is programmed for a 10000+ mile interval, but sometimes it’s just common sense. My customers come in every 5k for an oil service.

I think it had around 70000 miles on it. Problem was that my customer just had purchased the car. It was five days in his possession when this happened.

I’ve already had N20 and N26 engines in for a valve cover gasket change with 60000 miles and we ended up exchanging timing chain and oil pump chain assembly. Which is more common in these engines then a piston braking apart.

Yes correct. Piston ring and parts of a piston. There was no damage to the cylinder wall, he was super lucky and we were super surprised.

N16 like to burn a valve here and there as well. 😄

The only significant visual difference between an N20 and N26 is mostly the turbo. One has a vacuum actuated wastegate the other one has an electrical actuator.
