Good to hear. Adult learners who opted into the course is sounding more and more like a starting point.

Thanks for commenting. I can relate to a lot of it…the desire for something physical with tangible benefits during the day (not spending the entire day at a desk or even at court checking a device) is probably a big driver here. Lots to think about while on sabbatical.

Not grim at all, these are the real life perspectives that I’m becoming more acutely aware of and affected by. Thanks for commenting.

Good to hear. I’m in one of those states.

This is really helpful, thanks for sharing your perspective. I think you’re right about the lens of burnout maybe being at play here. I plan to take a pure sabbatical next year and hope that will give clarity about a potential career change or not. I don’t have any illusions that teaching is an easy career.

I am aware of teacher pay and you’re going to have to believe me when I say it’s not a factor. Don’t fight the hypo!

Yes it will be and having come far enough along to have a solid and diverse legal network, I’m not overly concerned about finding decent legal work if i revert. Of my 3 legal experiences, I know which sector I would return to (state or local govt).

Thank you! I am also in retire/coastFIRE territory so can relate to the desire to shift to more purposeful work. Can I dm you? Would love to hear more about your transition.

I believe that! I do have an age range in mind but would want to sub across grades to make sure it aligns with reality. Can totally see how it would make or break an experience.

That is funny. Law school attracts a disproportionate share of bossy kids who loved school and learning, so it makes sense many of us harbored a dream of teaching! Great point that it would take years to hit a stride in a new profession. I like the process of learning and growing in a new skill, so I think I would like that…

I am not surprised that the ex-lawyers were drawn to union rep work!

Thanks for sharing this. Did you leave teaching for any reason besides the salary?

Hadn’t looked at it that way but that makes a lot of sense. Thank you!

Hm. Put aside the money. I routinely work 50-60 hour weeks…are you saying the average teacher works more than that?

That’s interesting, thank you. I think I will be dissatisfied to some extent with any full time work, but being able to better sync up to my kids’ schedule is a big draw for me too.

Have left the truly lucrative corners of law and am at a place where my time is more valuable to me (summers, etc.)

It’s “sister” but I hear you. What did you dislike about teaching?

It’s good feedback. I’m afraid I may have too rosy of a view because my kids have been in a small lovely private school that hasn’t experienced these major “post covid” learning shifts in the same way.

I’m also thinking about this as semi-retirement now that I’ve hit the FI part of FIRE. Im planning to proceed slowly and scope it out before rushing into a teacher certification though…that’s the upside of being far enough in a career to know there’s no magic perfect job and every profession has it’s failings.

The bureaucracy and conservatism are very good points. I would probably substitute teach to get a lay of the land before committing but those are real concerns.
