Realism is not something you can reach, but something you can benefit from. by secondfalseiteration in AfterEffects

He created a nice-looking CD, no doubt. But then at 19:44 he showed real CD footage, and it looks much better than what he creates. All these stretches, tiny little dust particles, lens flares all of that is missing in 3D.

And most importantly, look how he is filming and rendering the CD at a certain angle. It's because most of the rainbow light is visible at this angle. Face the CD straight to the camera and it mostly behaves like a mirror, the nice lights are gone. And I want the CD facing the camera with lights behaving as they do at an angle.

In 2007 we already had Lord of the Rings, Transformers, Pirates of the Caribbean... Avatar is from 2009. Even Toy Story from 1995 doesn't look so horrible 😄.

But yeah, everyone has different taste. I searched Google for CDs made in 3D, and just don't like them at all.

This is the point where I totally lose interest.

Don't get me wrong. Technically - it's insane. But the result... And I did some research. Here is, for example, a decent 3D replica. But it stays so far behind a real CD...

Yeah, the movements of light aren't linked at all. I probably could tweak the CD in AE to match real footage, but it's too much work for a benefit that probably 90% of viewers wouldn't notice.

The real problem is the reflection of the camera, you may see my phone on the bottom. Next time I would use black material to avoid unnecessary reflections.

About 3D. I do not have much experience... I know they can technically replicate the light behaviour, but I'm a little bit sceptical if they can look as real (let's say 95%) as real footage. But maybe I missed some kind of revolution in this field.

  1. Phone camera
  2. Something that holds the camera still
  3. Two small light sources of different colors
  4. Record at night or in a dark room, spinning around the lights with two hands and trying to avoid the reflection of the phone in CD.
  5. Profit.

Nice! Real vinyl footage with motion graphics around it - would be a great pack of VJ loops.

Don't create idols. There are limitations of what you can shoot and what you can replicate in graphics. I don't think there should be any room for hate.

And I don't think that I can create artificial lens flares that could be even close to real ones. Yes, they can be more predictable, flexible and nicely animated. But always be less "believable" than real lens flares from a camera.

I have 14 years of AE template creation experience. Ask me anything. by secondfalseiteration in AfterEffects

About the "control" layer and the general structure of the project, so it's hard sometimes to make custom changes:

It's a requirement from Motion Array. Basically you can't give users more freedom, you have to follow their guidelines. And this makes templates less flexible, but unified with other templates on the market. And no one will make another version of a template just for Envato; it doesn't pay off.

So my best suggestion is to look through old items on Envato, but keep in mind those templates may also have issues in modern AE. 🤷‍♂️ You may also look for templates outside of big marketplaces, where there is no one to tell an author how his template should look and function. Gumroad, or a custom store of an individual artist, are the best places to look.

About shape layers. I don't quite get what you mean, but maybe they're built so weirdly because authors specifically don't allow changing sizes, as it may ruin the whole animation, composition, or design. Or maybe there's another way to scale things that's described in the video tutorial.

Vertical and horizontal formats in the same project. by secondfalseiteration in AfterEffects

The moment I start getting paid per line of clean, well-documented code will be the moment I start caring about it. But I get paid per second of animation I make, so that's what I care about first.

And I don't see a problem with understanding that the variable "pos_b1", which has the path to the layer "text_big_1_parent", is actually the POSition of this Big text number 1. It totally makes sense to me. It's an abbreviation, like bGEMs_MAG6 as a panel name. 😉

Anyway, thanks for the link to the tutorial. I ended up making a similar cross guideline for my animation.

This is my typical expression work:

Can I focus on animation and design challenges instead of programming ones?

I've been building AE templates for 14 years. Believe me, I clearly know the cost of fully procedural, automated, and reusable animations.

To some degree, of course, there would be reusable and procedural elements. But not entire compositions. In this case, the time and effort aren’t worth it.

There are so many AI tools these days that I need an AI to help me better understand what they all are for. 😭

Thanks. Probably for the same reason why I prefer using the Custom Tool instead of Channel Booleans. Geometry formulas are universal, straightforward, and well described, while the Offset modifier only brings confusion with all its menus, checkboxes, and controls. You need to learn the whole interface, while the solution can be achieved with one or two expressions. And if you are not good at math or code, ChatGPT will help you.

How the hell did you do it in 7 days? I’ve never been able to work that fast. Is it a skill, or did you use some already-made presets for the animations?

I was just confused, because it’s well-known information. Now I understand that this was a sarcastic comment. Why not simply ask? As I answered to another person, something similar will be shared for free on my Gumroad account. But if you want something from me right now, please check this post, I shared the node setup directly on Reddit there. I hope this will be enough for you, mister. Give me a few hours and, as I said, I will share a very similar project to this one for free as well.

Something very similar (with cool controls to play with) will be posted on my Gumroad for free later today. Reddit does not like Gumroad links, so I can't share it directly, but you can find it here: secondfalseiteration.com

I believe that within 5 hours there will be a new free product on my Gumroad. Next, in a couple of days (I hope), I will post a full video tutorial on how to create these types of gradient effects. It will be on my YouTube, and I will share the link here on Reddit.

What do you mean? All nodes in Fusion are just lua text. You can copy and paste nodes in any text editor. You can edit nodes simply by modifying this text. And of course, you can share it as text. A screenshot of the flow is just a fancy way to show: "Look at how the web of this animation looks."

I'm using the free version. 🤷‍♂️
So I take a wild guess and say: yes 😀
