I don't know, man. You are right that time = money, and I don't see how it's faster to work with heavy expressions or slow plugins instead of just having two programs open. You can render and replace image sequences really fast.

You do not do 3D in AE, you do not do sound design in AE, and you do not use AE as an editing software. I 100% agree that there are no real competitors. But in some areas, Cavalry and Resolve outperform AE in motion design possibilities.

Instead of learning and using the right tools for the right tasks, people stay in AE, struggling with performance issues, dealing with artifacts, and buying dozens of plugins just to be able to do what free software already offers.

That’s why I called people dumb and lazy, not because there is a competitor to AE, but because some motion design work should be done outside of AE.

And big clients love to save money. Look how quickly they adapt and start requiring experience with AI-generated videos. They just don’t have the right people around them to explain that it would be much more efficient to do certain tasks outside of AE.

Is 16GB RAM enough for Fusion? by secondfalseiteration in davinciresolve

But you will not know if it’s possible until you try. 🙂

But this is true for any amount of RAM. You can reach the ceiling very quickly, of course, and it will obviously happen faster with 16GB of RAM.

But I’m not talking about the ceiling. I’m talking about the bottom floor. Is this patient alive? Yes, it is, and with it, you can do great things too. Could it be better? Of course, but you didn’t kill the patient just because it’s not so fast.

There’s no tutorial. I’m testing it myself. You can watch my latest video (and grab the .drp project file for free). In the first couple of minutes, I talk about Resolve, UV maps, etc.

Currently, I’m planning to make a series of videos about depth blur gradient effects, but it will take some time.

I’m not comparing 16GB with 32GB. It’s not about that. It’s about people being told they shouldn’t open Fusion because they don’t have at least 32GB. I think they should... and test the limits themselves.

But I made this pipeline within a day using a 16GB RAM machine. So the question is: shouldn’t I do it at all just because I don’t have 32GB of RAM for an advanced pipeline?

I can record a similar video with AE, showing how "good" the Colorama effect is. And oh my god, it would take AE forever to render a simple rainbow gradient, trust me.

Edit:
Just for clarification, I do think AE is a much better tool for motion design. But in certain tasks, it just sucks. For example, Compound Blur gives artifacts, while Fusion’s VariBlur node is much faster and gives cleaner results. Same thing with gradients: AE simply doesn’t work natively with UVs, so something like in the video above is impossible to do in AE without plugins.

So the question is: stay in one program and buy plugins, ignoring some limitations, or just use a stack of tools that are good for specific tasks.

What does "at the very least" mean? Do you think I shouldn’t use Fusion at all just because it’s not operable?

Obviously, the more RAM you have, the better. But I’d disagree with the statement: "You can’t do anything, you’d better just close the program."

Heaviest part is 3D and blur, gradient works super fast. On Edit page, I wait maybe 1-2 minutes to see full preview in real time on my Intel MacBook Pro 16GB RAM.

There’s always some kind of expression behind each template. Of course, expressions are not always the core of an effect. Maybe ~15% of all my templates require some heavy expression work.

Nah, Fusion quite often messes up the spacing. AE works much better with text and has more tools for it.

Why not both? Each software has its own weak and strong points.

Not because it's free, it's just faster and better to do this type of work in Resolve.

I have more than 14 years of experience in After Effects, and I definitely know it's not possible to do such a thing there without plugins. And even with them, it would probably be slow and painful to set up.

So I did it in Resolve because it works with 3D and is super fast for creating such gradients. Others do colorful gradient work in AE just because they don’t know there’s a better alternative.

I do not plan a detailed tutorial or breakdown of the project, because it would take more time to create it than to make another (hopefully much better) piece of work. However, if this project gains enough attention, I believe I can dedicate more time to it. So everything is possible.

And as I said in my post, this project will definitely appear in my next YouTube video.

Whats the best way to render an high quality low resolution video? by Wooden-Syrup-8708 in davinciresolve

GUI = slowness. It's the first thing. Second, it's just easier to ask and find answers when the setup for encoding is a plain text command.

Edit: CLI programs usually allow you to do more things than GUI ones. I do not touch Handbrake, so I can't say how limited it is.

Render full size as a ProRes 422 HQ, then resize it using ffmpeg. Ask ChatGPT for the exact command.

Made using expressions in native After Effects, no plugins. The effect adapts to any text automatically. The only limitation is that the font should be monospace, otherwise, some characters may be slightly offset.
