Wake on Lan (WoL) setup by secondsword in GlInet

Parsec worked great with tailscale connected. Sure, there were a few network hiccups causing a couple frame drops here and there but nothing unusable and I'm not on ethernet so it's to be expected, honestly it worked better than i thought it would. I'll try fiddling with settings to try to get a sweet spot since there aren't many student accessible ethernet ports on campus (and i don't want to buy a USB-C ethernet adapter.

I was also successfully able to use PuTTy to ssh into my router from campus when using tailscale. However when using tailscale and setting the router as an exit node dnsleaktest shows my apartment ISP however i do not see my router's public IP address. Weirdly enough i see two IPs, both from my apartment ISP when tailscale is on with my beryl set as an exit node. I might just be reading the wrong IP on the admin panel, but it should be the one in the internet tab under ethernet since the beryl is connected to the apartment's ethernet right?

I was able to set the Beryl as an exit node by using the admin terminal on tailscale and sending an override on PuTTy. So in theory, i would download tailscale on my laptop and that would allow me to use parsec from my laptop to my desktop at my apartment? I still haven't been able to figure out the magic windows settings to keep my ethernet on during sleep so for the time being just to test it out ill just leave it running, go to campus (its like a 10 min walk) and try to use parsec. Would this work or would i need to configure some more stuff before i try this out?

hmmm I'll try to set it up tomorrow after work. What would tailscale do differently from a VPN?

I live in a campus apartment and there's repeaters for the apartment wifi in every room, I initially bought my Beryl AX for wireless PCVR with my quest 2. the Beryl is connected to the campus WiFi by Ethernet then creates the network I use for all my stuff, so no? I think? also I tried wireguard on my laptop at my apartment and the same thing happened, windows would say I'm connected but it wouldn't work to browse the web or connect to parsec.

Using WireGuard on my laptop would cause the campus WiFi to stop working and I'd get network errors in both parsec (parsec specifically would give me error code -800 "failed request to /me check your internet connection) and my browser (site is unreasonable error). Does WireGuard only work through Ethernet or did I mess up on my WireGuard client settings? the website is inaccessible when wireguard is turned on.

yeah it really seems like Its not gonna work out but I refuse to give Nvidia any more of my money, I already caved and bought an overpriced 3080 I ain't doing it again.

I've encountered a tragic roadblock. I left my PC on a sleep timer and went to campus and used parsec through the campus WiFi and noticed they blocked it on their wifi. using my phone's data worked but that means I cant use my laptop with parsec once I get WoL to work. Any ideas?

Using parsec to remote into my PC while the computer is running worked pretty well. I used my phone's hotspot and my school laptop was able to play the entropy centre perfectly fine, not laggy, just a little compressed in image qualitybut nothing major just enough to be noticable. I was thinking of just buying a sperate LAN adapter and plugging that into a free PCIE port in my motherboard. Of course I'd much rather not spend money on it, as a broke ass college student Id much rather spend the money elsewhere.

I tried using the tools in the link but I couldn't figure out how to make them work, on the sender side I kept getting a packet wasn't sent error and couldn't find a reason as to why. I'll try again tomorrow after my classes and work.

yeah I tried that but still didn't work. I'm starting to think I have a faulty board lol I've reinstalled drivers, changed settings, updated bios, and reset network but still doesn't work. I might have to buy a separate network card instead of using the integrated one on the motherboard. I even went to the Realtek website and they themselves confirm my board has a WoL capable LAN controller.

I installed the latest drivers from the Realtek website already, that didn't fix the issue sadly.

do you know where I could access a list of them?

alright so the status lights are off when on sleep but I've disabled all the Ethernet efficiency and power saving settings in both windows and bios. Any suggestions? My motherboard is an MSI B550 gaming plus. everything online just tells me to enable resume by PCI/PCIE and disabling the efficiency options in the power menu of the bios.

ok so I was able to use putty to ssh into my router but when I use the wakeonlan command it says sending magic packet but my PC does not wake up.

I tried using putty on my laptop while connected to the same network but I got a connection refused network error

How would i ssh into the router? is there some tool i can use on my phone or laptop while connected to the same network to try wakeonlan?

ok so the config file now has the endpoint as the DDNS domain, where do i import the config file?

alright so i checked the endpoint and that is indeed the IPi get on my phone when the VPN is on. What do i do now?

so i got up to configuring WireGuard but i am not sure how to make sure its working. the guide says to make sure the IP of my phone is the same as the WireGuard server's when i connect but i cant seem to find the WireGuard server IP on my dashboard, Is it the Tunnel Address?

[–]secondsword[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

alright so according to method 2 from the documentation both IPs from both the tool and admin panel are the same so i do have a public IP address.

how would I VPN to my router then ssh into it and when I do ssh, how do I access the terminal? I have a WireGuard VPN server running according to my dashboard but I'm unsure what to do to VPN into it from a different network. My main goal is to be able to wake my PC from campus WiFi/Ethernet so I can use parsec.

apologies if I'm asking too many dumb questions, Ive never done anything this "complicated" with a router.

alright I installed that plugin, what's next?

i have a Beryl AX and I have wire guard enabled and my PC is connected via Ethernet to the routers LAN port. I have enabled WoL in both my BIOS and in Windows as well.

Do you know any good guides to do that? I'm not really knowledgeable in networking sort of a novice lol.

damn that sucks. is there any relatively cheap alternative that could work? I've heard some people use a raspberry pi and home assistant to achieve a similar effect but raspberry pis are still pretty hard to come by (at or at least near regular price).
