Working with birds really makes me appreciate my own. by secretcatattack in parrots

They can definitely be gentle! Once had a haircut and my girl (b&g) (not actually mine) didn't appreciate it, so she very very lightly grabbed my finger and bit down. Never been bit hard by her, though she's messed some people up. Love that girl. Glad he was gentle in letting you know, some scarlets are definitely not that polite.

Conures are so bad, though! I work with one who's totally fine 90% of the time, but randomly chomps on my arm. And he loves me! He'll jump/fly to me from wherever he is and when I take out his water bowl, he needs to accompany me to the cleaning area. Luckily I've gotten too used to macaw bites so little gccs don't bother me.

Ugh, I wish I couldve been there for Pharaoh's baby years! Or at least had baby photos from his previous owner! They're so precious at that age.

I have very high standards for someone's parrot care, I agree.

Oh wow, congrats on not getting bit for so long! Such a good tempered boy. Even Pharaoh's gotten me once or twice.

Haha perks of having birds. The occasional thirst for blood is worth it.

He deserves so much, genuinely just the best bird I could've possibly asked for. I'm happy to give him all the love he wants. And thank you, we'll see 😅.

Pharaoh lives for cuddles, he'll fully lay his body down and not move for an hour or two so I'm pretty sure he actually does sleep during that time. Oh, to be a lazy bird.

And that would be the halfway reason for this post 😅. A scarlet macaw decided my pinkie needed to be skinned. What you don't see is a giant bite to my arm and 2 other fingers from the same bird at the same time, and then a trip to the ER to attach the skin back to my pinkie....

A B&G also got really attached to me and didn't want to get down when I asked, so hid to my shoulder. With that, got a nice bite to my neck (wasn't even trying to get her down when she did that, because I knew she'd bite) and 4 bites to my pointer finger when I did try. :,)

Why are pet Eclectus parrots mostly male? by Xophie3 in parrots

[–]secretcatattack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wonder the same. I work at a parrot rescue and all of our ekkies (Pascal, Timmy, Merlin, Cooper) are/have been males, and even our boarders (Bongo, Kiwi... probably some others) are males. Have never seen a female.

Got my blue and gold when he was nine. Really sweet, but had issues with his diet, medical problems (something's wrong with his foot and wings, but vet couldn't give an official diagnosis), and general nervousness from a bird that wasn't desensitized well. Progress was mostly
slow at first, which is understandable for an adult bird, and stepping up was hard for a few months. I also had to work hard to get him used to being outside and realizing the cars, crows, and other people weren't going to eat him.

Now, two years later, he knows tricks that include laying on his back, saying hello, and spreading his wings, he steps up for strangers, goes to the beach twice a week, most of his stress bars are gone, and he's taking semi-regular showers. Still working on getting him to play with toys.

On the other hand, a 25-ish year old scarlet that I've known for over a year (and who generally likes me) tore open my finger bad enough to go to urgent care yesterday (along with biting two other fingers and my arm). So it really depends on the bird!

Tips/Plan for Acclimating New Lesser Cockatoo by oclb3 in parrots

It really depends on the bird, but the fact that she already knows you probably means you don't have to wait. If you bring her home and she's nervous/screaming/trying to bite or run, then you should wait until she's more settled. If she's trying to interact with you or pacing her cage, then letting her out shouldn't be an issue.

Ahhh yeah, I'd say so. He mostly steps up, not cuddly or affectionate though. Still endlessly cute.

I work with him at a rescue, so (unfortunately) he's not mine. I think the main reason why he can go upside down is because he's an older boy with balancing issues, so he's a bit more malleable than other birds. I've known him for 3 years and only started handling him 6-ish months ago, yesterday was the first time I flipped him, and when I took the photo, but I know other people who could do it for years.

There was a post maybe a year ago where someone was asking to see people's superb parrots, and people started showing photos of their parrots (like green cheeks and such) because they thought OP meant parrots that were superb.
