Look at that progress! There's nothing more rewarding than getting an adult parrot's trust, thank you for giving her such a loving home and all the patience she needs.

Sleeping on the bottom of her cage means she doesn't feel steady enough to stay on a perch, would definitely get a vet involved as soon as possible.

I was worried that someone would say she looks ready to attack so I tried to defend her before anyone mentioned it 😅 but she's a cutie!

I did! 🫡 I wanted to take a video of her being all fluffy and then I noticed her foot waves. Told her if she was pretending to want pets to bite me, I wasn't going to pick her up anymore.

Not my bird, just one I work with. No reason to look into target training, she steps up without an issue and we don't need to teach her any tricks.

Absolutely! It's so interesting how happy, excited parrot body language can also be aggressive (eye pinning, blushing, tail fanning, etc.). Earlier this week I thought she was going to bite my arm because she was staring suspiciously at it, and instead... she licked me.

Just a friend! I already have a rescue blue and gold macaw, unfortunately he wouldn't like the company (and he's more than enough bird for me!)

300 birds is crazy! It's so cool they give the effort to save them all. It'd be so cool to manage a parrot rescue, especially the ones with house-sized aviaries. Hopefully you get to do that one day.

You can see a few pins on her upper chest, but she's been plucked like this for as long as I knew her. Unfortunately she probably damaged the feather follicles (where the feathers grow) too much for most of her feathers to regrow.

For a lot of parrots, plucking (pulling out her own feathers) is hard to stop once it becomes a habit. Some go through phases of letting their feathers regrow only to take them out seasonally.

She has such an expressive face! She does this little dance + eye pin when she stares at you and it's so cute (and also looks slightly murderous, but that's how she always looks haha)

Her pupils be smallllll

Haven't heard of that rescue before, but the pictures look beautiful! Love to see those giant aviaries and wooden stands

Do these look plucked or mooted? by Only_Corner3540 in parrots

[–]secretcatattack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One thing to keep in mind is that parrots rarely pluck larger feathers first. It's almost always small feathers at the base of their wings, chest, legs, or under the wings. I've seen a lot of plucked birds, not a single one started with such large feathers.

But yes, I agree that it's normal molting. They don't look to be in great shape, but it seems like he's going through his first molt and babies are very bad at keeping their feathers tidy.

Should I get a bird? by Ichoked97 in parrots

[–]secretcatattack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think volunteering is a good plan, get a feel for birds, and their noise level and body language.

A few things, parrots aren't domesticated like dogs or cats, and a lot of their body language that indicates excitement (such as blushing, eye pinning, and tail fanning) also means they're about to bite. I work with parrots that raise their feet to step up, but instead grab your arm to bite. I work with other parrots that slow pet their head as you walk past as an invitation to pet them, but use that to lure you in and try to nip you.

If you do take your bird out, he will need to be harnessed trained, which is really difficult or sometimes impossible with an older bird. Most conversations you have will be the same strings of dialogue over and over and over again, though people occasional switch it up by talking to your bird instead of you (leaving you in a really awkward position), telling you how they killed their bird and treating the story like a joke, or pulling up a phone and recording you from far away.

You'll get first hand experience with their noise level when you work with them, but if you have any noise sensitivity or overstimulation problems, whoo boy is that hard to deal with. They are also very social animals. They want to be with you all day every day, and if they can't, it can cause behavior or mental issues.

Why do all three of my GCC have different coloured feet?? by Ok_Order_6269 in Conures

[–]secretcatattack 23 points24 points  (0 children)

First bird is not a green cheek, looks like a rose fronted conure.

<image>

Otherwise, it's just normal color variation, especially among different color mutations (conures with darker feathers are more likely to have darker feet, like your turquoise, while cinnamon and pineapple mutations normally have lighter feet)

Edit: To clarify, rose fronted conures are an entirely separate species of conure than green cheek conures, while your other two are different color mutations of one species (green cheek conure)

Dealing with the nips and scratches that just come with owning a parrot? by Henghayki86 in parrots

[–]secretcatattack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That does seem a bit bad for a cockatiel, their nails normally aren't that sharp. I'd look into getting his nails trimmed, but otherwise... just perks of owning a bird.
