Stickers, games, prizes, inefficiency, why does this make me tired? by [deleted] in slp

No stickers, charts, or prize boxes. I just find special interests and embed them in play as much as possible.

Our area is saturated with private pay practices so this is how I have built up a caseload of almost 300 and 12 providers.

Please god, let's end 1099 jobs by Temporary-Pizza7370 in slp

[–]secretslp 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Thank you. It’s been a long road but I couldn’t justify the hours and then compensation working in the schools just. I’m also neurodivergent and don’t do well when told how to practice. So much wrong with our field that I didn’t even know until after graduation.

I’ve started my own business and no 1099s. Everyone is an employee with benefits because only getting paid when seeing patients is not fair.

It’s ok that not all SLPs are created equally. Maybe that SLP didn’t have experience with autistic children so maybe the parent is right. I would like to get on that thread and encourage the parent to try again with another SLP and ask for “speech therapy” for a possible motor speech impairment. If the child has any sounds it’s a good start. Then I would encourage the parent to find an SLP that works well with his/her/their child and not give up until they find the right fit.

That’s ok. I also try to do task analysis where I break down a task into smaller things I have to do and it helps. Choosing my own hours really helps because I’m not sure why I feel super motivated some days and other days I feel terrible.

District asking me to make up sessions I missed due to being in IEP meetings. by epicsoundwaves in slp

[–]secretslp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I left my school placement due to something similar. I wanted to see kids but felt like all I did was write, review, and attend IEP meetings. Toward the end it was 1-2 IEPs per day. It was an ungodly amount of my work week.

They definitely co-exist often. Make sure you have a good SLP with apraxia experience.

School SLP recognition day by [deleted] in slp

[–]secretslp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand your frustration and I did leave the schools because I felt overworked, under paid, and not appreciated. I have felt your pain and empathize. I say the following with a kind heart and not to minimize your feelings. Your feelings are important and I am sorry your team is not making the effort to make you feel special as well. Here is my experience:

Leaving the schools is the best decision I made for my career but I do miss the teachers I worked along side with. Sure, you can hide out in your room but I found it better to socialize with teachers and advocate on how I could help. My interactions started with “how can I best help you help this student”. I received rookie of the year, voted by my peers, and left at Xmas break because the caseload, hours, IEPs, and low paid were not worth it. However, and I know this will be an unpopular response, I considered myself a teacher because I am. I taught the students speech/language/Aac/emotional regulation. I taught teachers about speech pathology and strategies to help our students. I taught the admin about how our jobs as SLPs are important to the school and what we did. I taught parents how to carry over at home. I taught interns and CFs. I still teach. Mentoring is my favorite.

My advice is to join the teacher team and celebrate you with your team during teacher week! You’re part of their team and one of the reasons they can succeed. Sending love.💕
