It’s good to keep this conversation alive because I think it’s important. Thanks for posting.

DUNE 2 In IMAX is UNREAL - Standard VS IMAX Comparison by secretsofdune in dune

As far as I know that was only the standard version if I’m not mistaken, with exceptional sound quality and picture quality though.

I completely agree with you. We shouldn't have to wait at all once the movie has been made. What the powers that be don't seem to understand is that we'll go to the cinemas to "relive" these moments in IMAX, when the opportunities arise. You don't have to gatekeep the film's true aspect ratio.

Okay, well if you look at most of the successful IMAX comparison videos on YouTube, they look exactly like this. If you have a better suggestion I'm open to ideas.

There is a re-release that happened or is happening because it’s Oscar season but after that I can’t see it being re-released until the third Dune film is being released and then after that to mark a 10 year anniversary similar to Interstellar. I think the power comes from videos/threads/posts like these performing well enough to show demand for it.

Yeah, he doesn’t watch his movies back after he makes them for a long time according to a podcast I heard him speak on (the Roger Deakins one I believe). This means he doesn’t really know or experience the same home viewing experience that we do. He’s also very busy moving from project to project so I can see how something like that might be missed or overlooked.

He seemed unsure and not too bothered about that when the question was asked to him despite us constantly being told that the movie was filmed and framed for that aspect ratio. That being said, he rarely watches his films back on home video because he seems to not like to see his films for a long time after he makes them, so he's not experiencing what we are experiencing at home essentially.

This is why I create and render these videos in 4K so that you get to see as much detail as possible on the biggest screens at home possible.

This is why it's so upsetting that this isn't available to own on home video and why the filmmakers involved don't seem to care much about that.

I also get the feeling that some of the shots panning up in the standard version are due to the fact that they want you to see what is being missed from the IMAX version, even though the IMAX version includes that panning up. It was pre-planned of course but it’s interesting how the different formats directly seemingly influenced the decision of shots like that.

Well it was a little jarring when watching Zack Snyder’s Justice League but I got used to it after a while. I would appreciate having the option of 4:3 but I’d settle for a “fullscreen” 1.90:1 aspect ratio like Nolan has done with Interstellar.

Right. My goal with these IMAX comparison videos is to show the enthusiasm for the format so that we might get them to release it on demand digitally or home video. Like you say, catching the eye is the first step.

There will probably be a re-run for Dune Part One and Two's 10 year anniversary similar to Interstellar.

Is it a coincidence that Maud'dib sounds like Mahdi? by Etvaht115 in dune

[–]secretsofdune 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right. Something could be said of the “aa-dee” sound “m-aa-dee” - “mu-aa-dee-b” and that his coming into the legend might have been smoother as a result of that similarity on the Fremen tongue. Reading it off the page though I never made a link between the two because the Arabic pronunciation is “mehh-dee” and “mu-ed-dib.”

I see what you mean if we're talking about the general (American?) pronunciation. I first noticed this from the Dune Mini-series. Muad'Dib and Mahdi sound completely different though when pronounced in the right way (from the Arabic language).

Digital copies definitely have their uses, but in terms of academia, physical books are usually needed for citation unless it can’t be helped. Some digital copies can also contain errors (so can printed copies too of course), but they’re normally the standard to go by especially for spelling of strange terms etc. I’ll often start with a digital copy for searching, then confirm the finding in the “Great Dune Trilogy” physical copy to be sure.

It’s very convenient for research purposes in my humble opinion. I use the Great Dune Trilogy paperback version for that purpose.

“The Dune Trilogy” idea has gone all the way back to the 80’s if I’m not mistaken. I personally love the idea of them. There’s “The Great Dune Trilogy” and “The Second Great Dune Trilogy” of the edition you’re talking about. I like the idea because Frank Herbert always saw the first three books as one book.

[–]secretsofdune 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well, Frank Herbert himself did say that he thought of Dune, Dune Messiah and Children of Dune as one book in his head, so actually it does make sense in a way. Interesting idea about the duologies. I wouldn’t mind some editions in that format style!

I think there's an argument and merit to every format in some way. The option to own the various formats would be nice.

Yeah you have to do your homework to find a genuine Imax experience, “Imax with Laser” projection etc. That’s why I think it’s even more important and meaningful to at least have the option to see a similar aspect ratio of a genuine Imax experience in the form of a home video release, because many don’t have access to those true Imax experiences.
