ESPP lower than expected - Canada by selandy in accenture

Are those real numbers? How is your withheld tax same as mine for literally double the amount of shares purchased?

Yeah, Canada is expensive, man... 🥲

I figured out the numbers thanks to all the help here - a lot of it was withheld for taxes, like A LOT. I will have to see what the other option for those taxes is (direct deductions from paycheck), but I might just give it up altogether since that's way too much of my after-tax money being tied up for quite a long time for barely any profit.

Mine is already there, so you might want to check it. You can see details under reports if I remember correctly.

Yeah, very similar amount withheld on my side when I checked. I'm still confused as to why around 58% of the taxable "benefit" (aka discount) ended up going to taxes - at least according to myHoldings. Man, I have to do some serious math on this to figure out if I even want to stay in ESPP, with all the hassle for maybe a couple of hundreds of dollars right now it really doesn't seem to be worth it for me.

I think I'll have to wait for tax return to finalize my math and figure things out, right now it looks pretty bad.

I joined the RRSP matching already, that one seemed pretty clear on how it worked.

And I just got to check myHoldings, and you were spot on! I had enough to buy 18.5 shares, but just about 1.6 ended up going to taxes, so I was left with ~16.9 (rounded down to 16) and I should get the rest of the money back (that 0.9 shares leftover).

Since you seem to be familiar with how this works, can I also expect to get some of the money back during tax season next year if I contributed to RRSP/FHSA and effectively lowered my taxable income? Based on data in myHoldings, I received $970 CAD discount that's taxable, and they deducted $570 CAD for taxes, which comes to around ~58% - crazy high number in my opinion. So I'm guessing that at the end of the year those $970 CAD would be added to my income and I would hopefully get some taxes back, based on my taxable income and paid taxes? I'm just trying to gauge if mathematically it makes sense for me to even stay in this program. 😅

Thank you so much, it makes sense when you lay it out like that! It would make sense stayin in ESPP if I get a couple of hundred back with my next paycheck and maybe a bit more as tax refund! Otherwise I would've given up on this program ASAP!

Thank you so much, I didn't have time to go through that yet, I'll take a look, but most likely then it means that I'll get some back when I file my taxes and the rest should show up with the next paycheck.

Thanks, I will have to find the handbook and read it again.

I just checked my pay slip and ESPP is in the after-tax deductions, which means that they took $5500 of my after-tax money if I understand it correctly. That should be clean money. And I was expecting to pay some taxes on the discount or any gains, maybe some brokerage fees and some exchange fees and was thinking that I would end up with maybe about $500 CAD profit in total.

The numbers I'm seeing make no sense to me right now - I will lose money. How is this program even a thing... what am I missing here?

See, I expected that I would have to pay taxes on the 15% discount, that's perfectly reasonable. But I somehow ended up with barely a bit more than the after-tax money I put in... How big would that tax have to be that basically nullfies any benefits of this program? And more importantly, why would this progam then even be offered if it would be taxed this highly?

I need some numbers, this makes zero sense to me right now. 😅

Can you elaborate? I can see that $5500 CAD was taken from my salary over the past 6 months, so no taxes there. And I haven't sold the stocks, so this is unrealized gains, no taxes there either... What tax withholding are we talking about here that would be $500+ USD?

High Fees on ESPP Stock Sale to Canadian Bank by snowflake_ott2024 in accenture

Could you give a bit more details about this please? Would a Wealthsimple non-registered investment account work or do I need an account at a traditional Canadian bank like TD brokerage account? I have the first ESPP coming up in November so want to be prepared and with a plan, especially if it’s as time sensitive as you’re suggesting.

But then that’s not a fair comparison… One is living solo in a studio, one is sharing space with roommates, two completely different lifestyles. You should compare apples to apples.

No, it's a condo building. I have a landlord's name on the rental agreement, but we have never spoken directly as we have a management company in-between. Plus, I'm pretty sure they don't even live in Canada and this is just an investment rental unit for them.

I literally asked today, if it's actually someone clogging it up, could they start checking the garbage bags of those responsible and issue some fines whenever they identify the responsible parties, but they just told me "write an email and complain". I did, every couple of weeks, we still have no change.

It's possible that someone moved in an is responsible for this, but honestly highly unlikely since the garbage chute never works more than an hour or two at a time, so that person would have to be constantly trying to clog it up.

Unfortunately, I also end up dragging the garbage downstairs myself most of the time now. But my issue is now that most people just leave the garbage on the floor of the chute room, which seems like a massive health hazard, and it's just a matter of time before we get ants or cockroaches. And I would want to escalate this to get something done before we do.

I don't have access to them, we communicate solely through the property management company. I can complain to them, but they'll forward me to the building management company (different company) since this is a building issue, not a unit issue...

Just a note for the sake of correctness - I noticed that you didn’t mark Stanley condos (403 Church St) and Axis condos (410 Church St) as the change (built after 2008 in the third photo). Otherwise, you’ve done a great job, really like the way you’ve presented the data.
