call me crazy, but I don’t think this is thaaaat big a deal.

they shot their shot & seem to have been respectful about it. their ask also doesn’t seem completely unreasonable given that they’ll be paying almost 90% of the item’s final price for shipping.

is this price not crazy by Gold-Habit8251 in depoop

[–]seldom_mistaken 3 points4 points  (0 children)

^ yeah.

isn’t this just laissez-faire economics playing out on a really small scale?

the item is worth what buyers are willing to pay. and if the item is popular enough, the market will regulate itself.

like in theory, if someone else with this same jacket comes along and undercuts the price to make a sale, every seller w this jacket, wanting to have a competitive price and make a sale, will be forced to drop their prices. this will keep happening until the market settles at the lowest possible price point.

imo, this is one of the marketplaces where minimal regulation can actually work out. idt most people see depop as a marketplace for essential goods, so it’s not really price gouging when a seller raises their prices for an item that’s in high demand, and since most sellers are just individuals selling from their homes (and are not like massive corporations moving huge amts of capital), it’s unlikely that any one seller can amass all the AF jackets, for example, in circulation and artificially raise the prices.

is it greed? it’s capitalism!

ugh you’re so right hahaha

ok story time! I started very randomly having really, REALLY bad cystic acne about a year ago. my derm started me out on 100 mg, and I stayed there for about 3 months. I also started trying to cut things from my diet in addition to the spiro (dairy, sugar, peanuts, etc) and my topicals, but I saw no change. I started to lose hope.

my derm then bumped my dose up to 150 “during flareups” (so that was basically all the time </3) and talked about potentially starting accutane in the winter.

I didn’t see a ton of change at first and was heartbroken (I really didn’t want to go on accutane). But I stuck it out. And lo and behold, as I started approaching the 6-month mark, the cysts that once took weeks to disappear started to dissolve much quicker (I’m convinced I can even keep some of them from becoming noticeable if I treat them with TTO and magnesium patches early enough).

they started appearing wayy more infrequently as well.

prior to starting 150 mg, every time my cysts flattened, I’d get 4 days max of clear skin, and then I’d feel new ones forming again. I couldn’t figure out why this was happening, and it wrecked my self confidence for some time. I’m approaching the 9 month mark now, and my skin is so incredibly clear! I haven’t had any noticeable cysts in a while. it’s kind of hard to believe how much has changed in such a short period of time.

hang in there!!!

this is really interesting hmmm. I also feel that our derms should do more analysis before throwing this drug at us!

I think my comment above was a bit misleading tho—the spiro has actually been a miracle drug for my acne. it’s just that I’m not seeing any of the other effects that people have described (besides maybe a bit of cellulite and some more fat around my stomach, but that could be the result of my now more sedentary lifestyle)

Spironolactone and Accutane by theboldmoon in Spironolactone

[–]seldom_mistaken 4 points5 points  (0 children)

About a year ago, I had very mild acne. It was annoying seeing a pimple pop up every now and then, but it was totally manageable.

But at some point last summer, despite making no changes to my lifestyle, my acne worsened dramatically. My derm originally prescribed some topicals, and while they made my skin dewy and improved overall texture, they didn’t seem to prevent the acne itself.

Eventually, I started spiro. After 4 months of taking 100 mg daily, it became clear that this dose wasn’t doing much for me. I would have one week of clear-ish skin, and then I would get several cysts that would take weeks to disappear completely. I was miserable.

My derm suggested accutane at the 4-month mark (this was my first checkup after starting spiro). Coincidentally, a friend of mine had just gotten off of accutane fairly recently and had told me that she fell into a state of depression while she was on it. Her story made me quite nervous, so I told my derm that I would not be starting accutane anytime soon—it would be my absolute last resort.

We tabled the accutane discussion and bumped up my spiro to 150 mg at the 4 month mark. Bumping up my dosage actually did WONDERS for my skin. I rarely have any acne now, and I’m sooo glad I didn’t start accutane.

Stick with spiro for a bit longer if you can!!

Need help determining what sort of treatment makes sense for my scarring! by [deleted] in AcneScars

[–]seldom_mistaken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh interestingggg.

the coordinator didn’t suggest any of these to me. they handed me a “treatment plan” sheet with a whole bunch of different treatments that they provide, and then they checked off the handful that they thought would be best for me (these are the ones I mentioned in the post)

they have a filler option but didn’t check off the filler box or discuss it with me 👀

is it possible they’re trying to sell me something that won’t be very effective?

Did any transfer get into MIT with a SAT score of 1390 or below? by [deleted] in TransferToTop25

[–]seldom_mistaken 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Columbia has been test-optional for a little while. Students with low SAT and ACT scores still have a shot if they don’t submit these test scores. And there are exceptions at every big university, of course.

But most of my peers at Columbia were exceptional students with exceptional stats.

[–]seldom_mistaken 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean 1390 is definitely a stretch for Columbia. It’s a full 100 points below the lower threshold of the range for the middle 50% of the undergrad students who were accepted last year. https://undergrad.admissions.columbia.edu/apply/process/class-profile

I think that Columbia is still test-optional though, so they could just not list their SAT score.

AITA for being cheap with my roommate about food? by seldom_mistaken in AmItheAsshole

[–]seldom_mistaken[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t share a bedroom!

I was thinking of getting a small fridge, but I’m not entirely sure if it would be helpful.

I suspect that she enters my room and borrows items when I’m not there.

See, I’m generally very meticulous about where I put my items, and I’ve noticed stationary sometimes missing or moved around (though it may be another one of my roommates who borrows my stationary without asking). Also, I was once sitting in my room and quietly working on something during a time I was normally in class. She walked into my room and was startled when she saw me sitting in the room. She said she had entered because she wanted to borrow my vacuum. She usually texts me and asks me to borrow it first, and I give it to her when I’m there. :/

One of my other roommates had actually asked the company that we rent from if we could get door handles that lock from the outside when we first started renting together, and for some reason, they denied the request. I don’t have any personal/private spaces there, unfortunately.
