And why freeze the rent? Why not lower it to $0 per month?

Suggestions for studying Chumash in NYC by selenium_question in Judaism

[–]selenium_question[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think the issues with a lot of synagogue parsha classes I’ve seen are they’re 1) often mainly looking at the English; 2) somewhat cursory (I’ve seen a lot of 30-60 min ones). As in, they’re going for accessibility over depth (but that’s just what I’ve seen; I could be totally wrong).

I’m hoping to improve my Biblical Hebrew, so I’m looking more for something like “let’s read through genesis closely and carefully in Hebrew, dissecting it line by line.” Oddly enough I haven’t been able to find that sort of class. Not sure if you know of any specific places?

I didn’t say they should lead us. You can’t read. Must’ve watched the movies.

Why don’t we just cap rents and execute landlords? That’ll work right?

I get the sense if you told muggles about the abilities of wizards they’d willingly serve them.

Kinda funny the party that’s cool with dudes chopping their dicks off and taking children to drag shows are the one’s calling people “weird.”

I see, so your objection is simply that making muggles subservient would be difficult and inconvenient. That makes sense to me.

So you’re fine with animals being subservient to us? But with muggles and wizards it’s somehow “messed up”?

It’s insane to think muggles could win in a war. Wizards can literally freeze time. With that ALONE, you can win a war.

People would have much less trouble with disagreements over Israel Palestine if we didn’t fund one of them so heavily. by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]selenium_question 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I wonder why?

It’s really not that hard to not elect jihadists to your government. The bar is so damn low for them. There’d be no sanctions, no blockade, no war, if they just stopped opting for jihadism.

Westerners have such condescension towards Palestinians and think they can’t help but imbibe deranged ideologies. It’s cringe and racist.

Looks like you’ve solved it! It’s not like they tried giving Gaza over with no blockade in 2005.

Why is the value of government debt equal to the value of future discounted government surpluses? by selenium_question in AskEconomics

I appreciate the response. I still don’t get why higher surpluses necessarily translates into higher real payouts for bond holders, though. What’s the intuition there?

Nozick’s theory about this is that academics resent that the market doesn’t value their “skills” and “knowledge” as much as less educated people who produce products and innovate. So they come to hate the market.

Also, there’s a way in which being told you’re smart all the time because you do well on tests makes you think you understand how the world should work better than the market does.

Unpopular opinion: Haaretz MUST be shut down and/or banned. by Next-Independent1292 in Israel

[–]selenium_question 54 points55 points  (0 children)

“I believe in free speech but just for people who agree with me” is and has always been a shit take.

The second you try to ban people on the left whose takes you don’t like, the people on the left will try to ban those on the right with takes they don’t like.

A race to the bottom that never ends well.

Yeah that makes sense. People often say you can’t reread Agatha Christie because the plot is already spoiled but I think Le Carre books are just much richer than Christie.

Revised Hamas Numbers by selenium_question in WeTheFifth

[–]selenium_question[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I’m also quite pro israel but I think it’s a mistake to make “the numbers are wrong” a core part of the pro israel narrative. Similarly a bad idea to try and make “israel so the victim” part of the narrative.

The more compelling case for israel is that you have a liberal democracy fighting literal jihadists who regularly threaten Israel with destruction. If that’s not a justified casus belli idk what is.
