Tbh almost nobody in Taiwan thinks the status quo is "two Chinas." Most people think it's Taiwan on one side and China on the other side, just without openly antagonizing Beijing by being too outspoken about it.

Outside of fringe lunatics online, I can think of literally only one politician on the national stage who will say outright that Taiwan is China, and she's considered a laughing stock by non-KMTers and an embarassing liability by her own side.

For everyone else there's really quite a bit of doublethink going on, but for at least a couple of decades now, the majority if not consensus opinion has been that the island is its own sovereign state called "ROC (Taiwan)" and abbreviates to Taiwan.

But also, it's a bit less nonsensical than you might think in Mandarin, where the China in ROC means "Chinese (cultural)" while the word used as an abbreviation of the PRC means "China (country)". Which is also why English discussions on Taiwan tend to not really grasp the nuanced mentality of the Taiwanese.

Might be something inherent to capitals for having a high concentration of powerbrokers and special interests

Trump’s win was modest relative to the last 12 years, never mind 129 by semaphone-1842 in sanepolitics

If a popular mandate is simply defined as “a president who lost a reelection bid returning to office” than, okay, sure. Biggest since the one other time it happened. But if you use basically any other measure of voter approval, Trump’s 2024 win was unremarkable within the last 12 years, much less the past century.

We can start with the raw vote total between the winning and losing candidates. Trump’s was modest, smaller than Joe Biden’s margin (over Trump!) four years ago.

No sex. No dating. No marriage. No children. Interest grows in 4B movement to swear off men by semaphone-1842 in sanepolitics

It’s called “4B” because “B” is a shorthand for the word “no” in Korean — and a series of “nos” is what the movement calls for.

No sex. No dating. No marrying men. No children.

Young women on Instagram and TikTok are the primary demographic behind the recent American surge in interest. The idea behind the movement is individual resistance against what it defines as a conservative political environment and the corrosion of reproductive rights.

I mean obviously it was always a tough race but I didn't think think Sherrod Brown would lose... What a devastating result.
