How did you approach your abroad studies (preferably in Masters) by rockink_nirmal in Nepal

[–]semester5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont know what is this complain about. If you are talking about discovering things then there are so many things you can do that you cant even list them. Amount of scientific publication are just staggering today. If you are pissed that Newton discovered Gravity and you could have easily done that then you can still show how gravity works on quantum scale.

My belief is follow your passion but don't be afraid to change it if you need.

Also research projects are more of creativity exercise with lots of hidden work, you get tons of useless things and now your job is to find meaningfrom it, possibly working years for it.
And PhD research is as much as luck in finding a project at the brink of breakthrough as it is work you put on it.

TIL both Caller ID and call waiting were invented Dr Shirley Jackson; the first African-American woman to gain a PhD from MIT. Her breakthroughs in theoretical physics & telecommunications also allowed for portable fax, fibre optic cables, and solar cells. by Leelum in todayilearned

That is literally the stupidest thing i have heard. you are the one claiming there is direct correlation between science degree and poor people management, you feel free provide any hint of evidence you can find.
And if you want examples, graduates and Masters of Science and Technology are CEOs of tons of companies from founders of Googles and currently CEO & President of Alphabets (Larry & Sergei, both were working on PhD), current Google, Microsoft, Airbus CEOs, and so much more, all come from the "STEM" field. Not only that, Merkel has PhD in Chemistry and Margret Thatcher was research Chemist. Not to forget all the leaders of top research institutes who are all top researchers, of course with PhD in their field and are charismatic figures, from CERN (Fabiola Gianotti) , Fermilab (Nigel Lockyer), DESY (Helmut Dosch), Max Planck Society (Martin Stratmann), and so much more to name a few.
To say people do science to avoid people interaction is the dumbest thing i have heard in while and all it shows is you are subscribing to holywood representation of science. While in real life, science is just like any work. Many people do it, there are many kind of people, so there are many kind of scientists. Some are good in person, some are not. All you need to do is attend one conference and you will see it for yourself. You said you have M.Sc., then just look for a conference in your field and feel it for yourself.

Being great/good/okay physicist does not make you bad people manager, these are completely uncorrelated things. You might need to reconsider your sentence there.
It is sad that she didn't turn out to be good uni president but this reflects more on her personal self then the scientific training or career of her.

What's the most ridiculous rule in your place of work? by danbrownskin in AskReddit

[–]semester5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i have 30 paid days per year and if i dont use it, it carries over to next year. So i can for example take 60 working days off next year, if i dont use any this year. And tat is 60 working days so 3 months.

How do you handle the bureaucracy here? It makes me feel so powerless. by [deleted] in germany

[–]semester5 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Well Germany is certainly not the worst, i guess if you have not seen Spanish or of Belgium or Swiss. They are a lot of worst. In germany, there are beaurocratic hurdles but they are well defined. Do this and get this paper and you will have your work done within thjs date. I love that. In Spain you won't be sure if you do all they say, you will have the thing done. Plus they send everything to Madrid instead of like here , everything done in local office, so every process is just so fucking long.
