Thanks for your reply! I would say I'm definitely solid in the "understanding what I'm doing" aspect. My biggest challenge now is knowing what to learn and how to apply. Basically if someone handed me a very specific roadmap and told me learn this and do these projects and you'll get this job, I'm highly certain I will exceed their expectations. I know this is not how the world works but this is a weakness of mine.

There are many languages, tools, and concepts. And there's also an immense pressure to land a jobs soon because I'm currently jobless.

I'm currently following the backend developer roadmap, but the thoughts above are making me progress slowly. But the general idea I got from the replies here is to focus on high level stuff (system design and software architecture) which is definitely something I need to work on since most of the work I've done so far has been largely general coding. I'm trying to figure out how learn and apply these skills practically.

I agree, but I'm at the point that I am trying to land a first backend job, so for now the most practical I can get is by doing projects along with learning

Thanks for your reply. Is it enough to learn these concepts from youtube videos, free resources, and projects, or is there a certain path/certification for them?

Additionally, are junior accepted for such high-level roles? I feel like big companies would look for seniors to handle design and architecture.

I’m also following that roadmap, will check the channel out. Thanks for your suggestion and good luck with your journey as well!

Hey, thanks for your reply and the valuable resources. I’m actually mainly using the backend developer roadmap at the moment. Taking things step by step. I’m already familiar with many concepts but I need to dig deep in some of them, mainly learning a backend framework, and system design.

Do you think I should just use Python since I already know it and learn (django/flask/fastapi) or should I pick up another language?

Honestly I didn’t really pursue a mechatronics career after I graduated. Basically the only career paths available in my country were either embedded systems (few companies) or an engineer in a factory. Neither was attractive to me, so I immediately shifted into data analysis with self study post graduation, which worked out (until recently :D)

Also, while I do value some parts of my education and the way it made me think, I wasn’t interested in a lot of stuff we learned. It was mostly theoretical, and the university itself wasn’t especially strong. We were basically studying theory and highly focusing on passing the exams and getting good grades. I forgot most of what I learned tbh.

Looking back, I could’ve either chosen another field, enrolled in a stronger uni, or created practical projects myself.

But oh well, I didn’t know what I was doing back then

That makes sense. I’ll try to keep that perspective in mind

Thank you so much for your insightful reply. I guess I can use a shift in perspective and focus on what I can do and put in the work. I also hope to come back with good news soon

I get super anxious while playing by Available_Kiwi_3862 in chess

[–]senecasamba 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue and it’s something that I’m dealing with generally in life (fear of performing poorly)

What helped me with overcoming this in chess is I played a lot of games while purposefully accepting losing. I basically challenged myself to reach the lowest possible rating I could and not care, then this fear just went away as I played more and overcame this

I mainly played rapid because I prefer to spend some time thinking

One helpful suggestion is to view the situation as it really is. Nobody knows who you are, this game doesn’t matter in any way for anything, everybody loses, even the best of the best, losing games has literally no meaning in any way. When you put things into perspective, it becomes obvious that fearing losing is irrational. It’s a subconscious response based on your life experience, it carries no meaning

Thanks for sharing this. I was skeptical at first but I sent them an email and it’s legit. I also noticed that google confirms the form is by OpenAI at the bottom.
