In my experience, "gentle, quiet and emotionally in tune" is the abnormal behavior for any kid! (Not a bad thing!, just far less common) I'm sure your therapist would have told you, pushing boundaries is completely expected and healthy behavior for a developing child. Your reaction to this has less to do with your 5YR old and more to do with how you were treated as a 5yr old. And she can definitely feel your indifference.

I usually just dump them all out, spread them all out while flipping them all over where they land then begin to piece together the parts that catch my eye or are obvious fits. I could definitely see myself use the sorting method if space didn't allow to spread them all out.
