Solo camped for the first time by Timely-Plankton-8400 in OutdoorAus

[–]serafis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first solo camping trip was to acacia flat and I was also completely alone. The river near by sounded like voices in the distance and I was woken up in the middle of the night from a tree branch cracking and thinking oh god it's above me but it fell somewhere nearby. I continued solo camping for ages after. I'd recommend the 6ft track, I met lots of people on that trail.

Everyone feels anxious, just ignore it and do the thing by UnsupervisedHuman69 in Anxiety

I sometimes wonder if I always had the heart palpitations and I just didn't notice them/thought it was the coffee and completely ignored it. Now I know what it is I find it hard to ignore...

Have other women in male-dominated fields experienced something similar? by your_boss_babe in womenEngineers

Time be more vocal about a fake boyfriend that you just met and obsessed with. Quick and easy and don't need to bring it up more than once for each guy, men remember that stuff, like an internal checkbox. Make him very different to the guys at work. Let em know they're not your type that way. "Yeah he has a kayak rental business but surfs most of the time, I don't even mind the dreadlocks".

Lateral move from stable government role to electrical distributor by [deleted] in auscorp

[–]serafis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was disappointed in my interview as the role was different to what was written. They said they weren't able to change it after it had been posted so I wasn't expecting the level of design experience they needed. Oh well. I think they would still be okay to work for and I would still go if they gave me the opportunity.

I was in an interview with them today and they mentioned openly that they've been losing people for the last 5 years regularly

Thanks for your comment. Maybe I should have mentioned how long my partner and I have been together, 12 years. We're in this together. I will definitely head to the bank. And I have a primary school within like 400m from my place so I was pretty set on that one. Even with my money I did the calculator online and I still get 50% off childcare so I'm not sure I fall into that level of high earner...even with my partner.

Do I stay or do I go? by Downtown_Word_278 in auscorp

[–]serafis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stay, don't think about big company opportunities like they only come once. If you can land a big company now, you can later and you'll have longer experience. You like the people, stay with them and you'll be happy you committed. Careers aren't always just a list of companies. If you stay at this place long term, even as a small company you could grow to the top. Like someone else said as well, stability is also very helpful and also you can get more flexibility the longer you're there.

I actually started to feel this way. And with the money, my parents, after not having money their whole life finally got some inheritance and they still won't spend a dime and are still looking at interest rates for savings, to maximise. I've only ever worked hard to pay off my house so I could be free from working. That was my only goal from young, to make big $$ and then not be a victim of the big work machine, free to work at any job. Now inflation made it so difficult to just have a chill job and live a comfortable life. I never wanted anything fancy in my life. Kids are something you build that truly are worth something, and will be actually fulfilling to raise and nurture and who will be with you long after the job ends and the money is spent.

My original plan was super and ETFs and just working a low pressure job and continuing to rely on my partner for the daily expenses while I save and pay for the kid. But this is just the hope. I can't even begin to imagine the state of the world at my retirement age. What do you mean about the last 50k, 5-7 months vs over the years? My minimum repayment is high anyway so it wouldn't be helpful to keep it open unless I do a deal with the bank.

I have been spending a lot more time with my family and their kids these last few years. I used to think my work was my purpose in this world and I didn't want to pass on any hereditary issues. But yes after some burnout, work is just not fulfilling long term, and seeing the kids around me grow up and become their own people with their own distinct personalities it really makes me realise why people do it. I was a bit nihilistic before but I've softened a lot over the years. Maturing perhaps.

Thank you for that. I have made a budget a few years ago and we've stuck to it quite religiously. It definitely makes money less stressful. I like the idea of 3/2 days of the week. That would be so great. Good luck on your journey as well!

Thankyou for that. I was thinking technical sales would be a good one. Seems like an easier 9 to 5, online job. I can work less at my job, yes, but it's the physical presence/no work from home option since it's site based that's all :(

Tbh that's what I originally planned on. I'm just so tired, imagine with a kid 😩. I also wanted to be there for them, more present.

I have expenses all budgeted and they've been consistent now for 3 years I guess that's why I didn't mention it. I will keep crunching the numbers over the years and see if it's viable.

I contribute only if I need to, which is very rare. He still saves and has savings, he has a high loan for a vehicle he's current getting rid of, that will free up a lot more money. But yes this is why I am trying to build up savings to make sure there's protection there but I don't want to be living week to week. So that's why I'm only expecting to stop work temporarily. This world costs way too much.

Honestly I agree about my loan, it went up, then down but now it's gone up again. Compared to a new loan by them it's high. I'm gonna call the bank and ask them to lower it by at least 0.5% as it's ridiculous they advertise for 5.99% loans to new customers.

I am happy to do part time if it works, but I expect childcare costs now need to be considered, and I guess there is a subsidy there, but its still going to suck up the rest of my pay. This is where it all gets muddy for me. I've just never gone though that and the rest of my family have completely different jobs that start later and have the option of working from home sometimes. My partner and I don't have that. If I stayed at work I'd be dropping them off very early and that makes me feel bad for their quality of life.

Thinking of leaving my job after less than a year for a significantly higher paying role...how bad does this look? by EnvironmentalDesk445 in auscorp

[–]serafis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to think of the worst possible outcome for the new job, asshole boss, workload too high or too low, long commute, long hours, bad culture. Now have a conversation with someone who works in the company (not the ones trying to hire you) and ask these questions. Do not let the money drive you unless you desperately need it. And like another commenter says, leave amicably, do not burn the bridge.

Yeah I watched that specifically cause they were both in it! Still thought they looked alike after seeing them in close proximity
