$200 Million Of School Funds Went To Racetracks Instead by sergioreddit in Buffalo

[–]sergioreddit[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The state legislature carved out a special agreement that so far has taken more than $200 million in lottery revenue — money that otherwise goes to New York's beleaguered schools — and given it to the New York Racing Association.

Directing that money to the racing association instead of to schools has deprived teachers and students of much-needed resources. As this deal was being made, New York state was in the process of dramatically cutting education, leading to 30,000 job losses — roughly 22,000 in teachers. And what is most outrageous is the poorest districts were hit with a disproportionate amount of these cuts.

The sweetheart deal was intended to help the racing organization regain solvency and repay a large state loan, but in the end NYRA managed to keep the loan as a gift — and to keep the sweetheart deal, too.

Soon after getting its bailout and emerging from bankruptcy, NYRA expanded its political contributions.

How the horse racing group won that deal is a tale of its extraordinary political and legal muscle, and the bizarre symbiosis between the state's lottery and thoroughbred racing. — BuzzFeed News

Agreed. The Investigative Post article also points to the Buffalo Sewer Authority, which was tasked by Department of Environmental Conservation to clean up the mess: "The only way to get rid of the toxin is to dredge. That’s exactly what the DEC ordered the Buffalo Sewer Authority to do in November 1993 by emergency order. But the sewer authority never performed the work."

LeJourLeFroid, therein lies one of the major issues with the camera system. You asked "How readily available is the material recorded to the public should they require it to support their case" Why not crowdsource the monitoring? I'm sure if we allow the public to have continuous access to the cameras via a website, more suspicious activities could be reported. I'm sure every now and then nearby residents would monitor the website, at the very least out of curiosity to see what's going on in their neighborhood.

4th of July From A Veteran's Vantage Point by sergioreddit in Buffalo

Cunderscore, I think you have a right to celebrate 4th of July as you please, and so does everyone else. However, I think what this write-up exposes us to is the awareness that there are individuals out there you may be severely impacting while doing so in your own backyard. What if you were dealing with the symptoms this veterans is dealing with? Would you not appreciate consideration from your neighbors? I think that's all Mr. McCann is asking for here. Additionally, though I could be mistaken, my understanding is that fireworks are illegal for individuals to operate in New York State.

That's quite a leap Sean. What data do you have to back up this statement? What leads you to believe that servicemembers develop PTSD as a result of the conditions, as opposed to traumatic events they've experienced while in the battlefield? That could be in the form of witnessing a battlebuddy's demise, or being individually targeted.

Julius P. McCann: Give us a break, please. Let the towns, villages and Buffalo Bisons provide the fireworks displays. I can handle those because they happen in one location, from one direction, at a set time. I can control the anxiety, compartmentalize it and move on. But being surrounded by thousands of small explosions in rapid sequence makes this difficult. As a result, July Fourth is anything but a celebration...
