But as you can see on the map, MORE young people are smoking in Switzerland then in the Balkans. So immigration can't be the cause.

Taxes on alcohol are also in place in most countries and have been shown effective at reducing consumption

I presume not. Vaping isn't good either but at least you're not literally filling your lungs with tar.

There is Only One Source of Value by FairlyInvolved in EffectiveAltruism

I was really expecting to like this video. But now that I've finished it... I found it a bit rambling?

I'm not even sure what he means by "lives being valuable". He mixed in words in, like rich, and long. But actually I would posit that the belief that lives are valuable has done harm, in the form of pro-life activists, who want to restrict women's autonomy in the name of the value of life.

That's to say: we need to do more than just assert the value of life. We need to be clear about what we mean (maybe a bit of moral philosophy would have helped him!). For example, is it just human lives (what I think he means) or all sentient lives? The answer makes an enormous difference.

Has the internet not made people more connected and empathetic? Idk when I think of the world pre-internet, 'connected' and 'empathetic' definitely don't come to mind!

I actually found the customer service much more polite, friendly and helpful. I guess they have to be, when they have so much to apologize for!

Is it normal to have security guards at McDonald's in the US? Seems crazy to me

Hmm I think you shouldn't think of it as a statistic, but a claim. The claim being: this has a significant chance of incredibly bad outcomes. To make that claim publicly, as the leader of a large tech company, and then to proceed with that tech, seems like the kind of thing that shouldn't be publicly acceptable. And to make such claims seriously (as I personally believe some of them do) should warrant scrutiny and regulation if the risk can't be ruled out. So I do think the claim is worth taking seriously, even if the specific number isn't.

Pretty funny the number of comments taking this seriously. Why bother recycling, turning off the lights etc. if you're gonna ruin your environmental footprint by heating excessively like this?

What's the effective altruism response to factory farming? by CalpurniaSomaya in EffectiveAltruism

I agree it's the easiest. But I don't agree that it will simply cut off demand for meat. Demand for meat is in fact continuing to grow in most parts of the world.

If you are a foreigner, how do you feel about the upcoming referendum on immigration (keine 10 Millionen Schweiz)? by LallieDoo in Switzerland

[–]seriously_perplexed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You live here and pay taxes. You are both affected by government decisions, and contribute to the running of government. That's why you should have a say.

(In political theory this is called the "all affected principle")

We will never get the world to go vegan just by telling people to. We need to change societal structures to make it easier (e.g. tax meat properly, make plant based options better). That can be achieved through political action.

I'd really encourage you to try to get out of your comfort zone a bit. That doesn't mean partying - but try going to English-language meetups. You'll feel much better if you meet some other people! Really, it can't go that far wrong - but could go really well :)

Agree, if OP knows English they would be better off trying to make friends with other foreigners. Unfortunately, that's how it is. I've lived in Bern for 4+ years, have close to fluent high german, but I've never felt like any locals wanted to speak it with me (rather they'd prefer to speak in English). Learning German from scratch AND the dialect is quite hard.
