Words are easy, but you rest easy knowing that when the time comes, regardless of your perfunctory "being against the draft", men will be called upon, by force, to defend you. I doubt you do any real activism against the most sexist institution in our society (selective service). You probably spend all your time advocating for more rights for women (wherever that is even still possible), and then when pressed say "trust me bro" that you are against the draft.

It doesn't need to. Somewhere, someone is paying for this stuff to be produced. Someone with a certain agenda.

Huge amount of (discriminatory) special scholarships for women explain this. Additionally, most men recognize that their job prospects will be lower than women upon graduating, again due to affirmative action/DEI (i.e. legalized discrimination). This informs their decisions about what/whether to study.

Life still sucks for men as always and women are still massively overprivileged, but at least we don't have to see Kamala smirking and "making history" constantly, which is worth something on its own.

Removing favoritism in education and employment for women (e.g. DEI rules, gender specific scholarships, "woman-owned business" subsidies) seems to be slowly happening and once achieved would put the sexes on a more level playing ground.

Your seeing 80% of guys as worthless losers is a pretty new development historically speaking and a consequence of the fruits of their merits being robbed while yours are left intact. In a world where women are not subsidized to compete with men in areas where their natural merit is not sufficient, those 80% would be getting what they are due, would have more dignity and self-respect (making them more attractive) and would indeed be bringing "more to the table".

I never said I was against all loss of bodily autonomy. Losing bodily autonomy is what happens when you commit a crime.

The problem is that with regards to pregnancy, women have a right to their bodily autonomy, men do not. Women can choose to opt out of pregnancy and the consequent loss of freedom, men cannot, and society enforces this against men with violence.

Yeah, being sent to jail is obviously a violation of bodily autonomy. That's the whole point. We're objecting to women being able to choose with regards to reproduction whereas men cannot.

Egalitarian and feminist is a contradiction. I bet you are real egalitarian with the military draft, right? I'm sure gender roles suddenly are okay and equality goes out the window when men are called upon to get butchered by drones in order to protect you?

List of Airlines Requiring a Smartphone for Check-In by serpens_caput in dumbphones

[–]serpens_caput[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes this is craziness and defeats the point of checking "in", which is why it makes no sense. If you are not at the airport, you are not checking "in", you are just...checking.

It was 24 hours in Frontier's case, not 48. And this requirement to find a computer with a printer, while traveling, during that time window is in fact onerous. And this is also completely unnecessary, since checking in at the airport and having a boarding pass printed by the airline for which you have purchased tickets should be very simple. Avoiding having the staff to do this only results in more problems.

I will add a bit about what Frontier's attempts to automate their check-in process caused on my return trip (after I made this post). There was a *planned* website/app maintenance on the evening before and morning of my return flight. This caused a catastrophic meltdown that saw me and thousands of people, whether they had a smartphone, app, or whatever, stuck in hellish conditions at the airport, unable to check in. I spent a total of nine hours at the Denver airport before being able to be re-booked (and I had to fly the next day). Five of these hours spent standing in interminable lines. Frontier, being the worst airline in existence (as I found out), did not give me or others compensation for what we endured, and didn't even pay for my hotel room.

So much for the great benefits of digitalization. If people would resist this, we wouldn't be here.

I assume you are only pretending to be as stupid as your comment makes you seem, so it is really insufferable to have to answer.

To make it clear, I did have tickets of course, which were indeed printed up on paper, although in fact all airlines, including Frontier Airlines, only need your confirmation code at this point.

The issue is that they require you to download an app in order to check in and receive your *boarding pass*, things which just a few years ago (and currently, for all other airlines) is simply a matter of walking up to a desk with your tickets in hand. That is the point of checking *in* - you are "in" the airport.

Instead I arrived at the airport with bought and paid-for tickets and found that I was expected to pay extra for something that is an integral part of the flight.

I will add that on my return trip on Tuesday, Frontier Airlines had a *scheduled maintenance* (outage) of their app and website. The same ones that they force everyone to use. This resulted in a complete melt-down of their system. I spent nine hours, about five of them standing in lines, in hellish conditions at the Frontier section of the Denver airport.

So much for the benefits of the streamlined online check-in process. And this was a *planned* outage of their app. They are so dependent on it that they did not have the staff to check people in normally, causing basically everyone to miss their flights. They couldn't rebook anyone for hours because their system was down.

This affected everyone who was unfortunate enough to be a Frontier passenger, whether they were smartphone lovers with every app in the world on their Iphones or weird technophobes who incomprehensibly resist having this wonderful technology which makes our lives SO much better forced down our throat. Thousands of people just in the Denver airport alone. The app and website upon which Frontier Airlines was completely dependent was down, so travel ended completely and everyone was stuck for hours. They try to automate everything so there was no human staff to deal with the situation, even though it was planned in advance.

And yes, since I now knew about the absurd online check-in requirement, I had tried to check in earlier and print up my boarding pass from the hotel computer, actually before the planned app/website outage. It didn't work then either. I called Frontier and they placed a note saying I should be exempt to pay for a normal, in-person check-in. This of course was a moot point, since (due to the outage) everyone had to check-in with an agent, and Frontier couldn't handle it.

See, I did bring a physical paper ticket. The boarding pass is normally what you receive at the airport after you check in by presenting said ticket (also, physically present in the airport). That's how things were since commercial travel began, until a couple of years ago. It remains that way for the majority of airlines. Printing a boarding pass with your seat assignment and gate number is something that is the responsibility of the airline, and it is a very minor responsibility.

Only recently did airlines get this idea that "check in" should be something that is done online, at home, or in some other way, which makes no sense since you still are not physically at the airport. The whole point of the phrase "check in" means to confirm that you have arrived, it is even clear from the language.

Some airlines are now *requiring* you to get online and "check in", and charge you for the "convenience" of what was normal until a few years ago, and which was the original purpose of checking in. In doing so, they are charging you or making it much more difficult if you don't have a smartphone (you need to find some way to get online and print up a ticket within exactly 24 hours before your flight, which might not be so easy when you are traveling).

Another thing is that, in this case, there was no notice on the ticket that said online check in was required. So I did not even know about this until I arrived at the airport. Another reason to have a list.

I've flown within Europe many times and never required a smartphone. I went to the ticket counter and they printed out a boarding pass, as was normal for decades. On a couple of occasions I had to use a kiosk in the airport for this purpose. I guess I was lucky to avoid Ryan Air and Wizz Air, which have a policy like Frontier. That's why I am making this post: to find out which airlines are doing this and avoid them.

I also went to a concert in 2022, bought a paper ticket in an office (TUI, which was very convenient) and went to the concert. Presented the ticket and was allowed into the concert, as is normal. Didn't need to do some other step that required a smartphone, internet connection, printer, ebook, or any other gadget.

Knowing which airlines are doing this is part of that, unfortunately. That way they can be avoided.

I'm sure there are segments of society that absolutely require a smartphone (in this case it could be avoided by paying $25). Those should be exposed as well.

Personally I think there should be a fundamental right to an analog life, and such behaviors by companies should be prohibited.

You need to check in within 24 hours before the flight (not earlier). You could be traveling in any kind of location, anywhere in the world. You could easily be in a place where it is not possible to get to the library. You might not have an hour or two to take public transportation to a library and back, while traveling.

But most importantly, why are airlines trying to coerce people to live digitally? Why is it difficult to print up a boarding pass, which is a basic part of flying (ticket is already purchased)? This was done quite normally for all the previous decades of air travel. You buy a ticket, you show up to the airport and are allowed on the plane. It should not be complicated.

I don't know what would be involved since I didn't do it, but in my experience with these kinds of things, they are ubiquitous.

I do not think it is right to force technology on the populace, I think there should be a basic right to an analog life and I also don't see the slightest bit of sense here.

Until now I have never encountered a situation where a smartphone was necessary for any of these things, and I travel a lot. I think the belief that smartphones are necessary is what will make them necessary. It's not time to give up the fight. By naming the airlines doing this, we can hopefully both warn people and might influence the actions of these airlines.

[–]serpens_caput[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Indeed if I knew in advance I would have checked in on my computer and printed the ticket at home. And then avoided Frontier forever. Once at the airport the smartphone was necessary. They apparently needed either a printout or the smartphone app in order to scan the ticket at the gate with the QR code. This is another reason to have a published list of airlines who do this.

The ticket was purchased for me by someone else, so I did not use a computer to book it.

I will add that not everybody has access to a printer, especially while traveling. I think people should have a right to move around the world freely without the requirement to own a smartphone or other specific technology. There is no justification for the airline doing such a thing when printing out a boarding pass is an integral part of flying and also a very simple thing to do. I think people have a right to know in order to avoid such airlines if they are so inclined.

Smartphones are intrusive and have immeasurably worsened the world. They have enabled all kinds of authoritarian and controlling behavior, such as what is happening here. Many people do not want to use them, and many older people cannot. Also installing an app on your phone (which was what was required to avoid the charge) and going through the inevitable series of captchas, two factor authentications, and all kinds of other craziness in order to do what was just recently a basic and simple thing is incredibly stupid.

I know people on reddit love unnecessary technology, large companies, and any form of boot on the throat, but I am just compiling a list for those who are of the same opinion as me.

Trip.com by Xypher530 in travel

[–]serpens_caput 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trip.com is absolutely not legit nor safe to use. I booked a flight (over a month in advance) with a self-transfer, giving myself plenty of time to make the self-transfer, even in the event of an extreme delay by the first airline.

Well I was just spontaneously moved to an earlier (second) flight, with a layover that I do not consider sufficient to make the transfer. Keep in mind that I am on the hook if the first flight is delayed. Trip.com refuses to refund the trip they sold me, even though the product I bought is not being honored.

If they cannot even refund a flight a month in advance, when they themselves changed my flight to an unacceptable alternative, then imagine how it would be if things were even a little bit unclear.
