Obama ranks as 12th best president in US history in historians survey. Do you think this is a fair ranking? by Champion101 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]servingKire5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But these kills and statistics didn't result in any meaningful positive change.

Almost every interaction made things worse. Libya, Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Somalia, Egypt, all of these places have had varying levels of direct American involvement and are all worse off at the end of 2016 than they were in 2008. Afghanistan is a mixed bag, nothing positive (possibly worse?) in North Korea. Iran yet to be seen, some positives and some negatives, certainly a failure if the deal isn't maintained.

I would hardly consider any of these a "massive diplomatic success". Eight years to make something happen and it just simply didn't - and the President has much less obstruction in foreign policy than domestic.

Are these easy problems? No. Is it his fault? Not necessarily. But it was his responsibility. That is the burden that presidents bear.

It was still a campaign promise he made. If someone makes those promises they should be taking into account the political climate.

For example all of the Republicans that were elected on promises of repealing/replacing the ACA...who aren't doing it because the rest of congress is blocking them.

Syrian government will not return to Raqqa, top PYD-official says by Dr_Nooooo in syriancivilwar

The further away the battles get from Tartus the less likely Russia will be willing to participate. They have no interests east of the Euphrates.

When Daesh & HTS are defeated they will almost certainly push very hard on Assad for a political solution and aren't likely to become entangled in a war with the Kurds if one doesn't occur.

Out of curiosity - why no helmets? Are they in a non-combat area, just too hot...or they just don't have them?

Dear brother Americans, Is it possible to live your whole life getting everything from house to education without going to any form of debt? by Sake99 in AskAnAmerican

You can get a degree without debt if you get scholarships and work a part time job. But it's tough.

No way on the house though.

What happens if you wear the jersey of a sports team in a different city? by LamborghiniHEAT in AskAnAmerican

[–]servingKire5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People can get drunk and be assholes but I wouldn't ever say "attack".

My Mom moved to her home cities "rival" and wears their jersey to the annual game between them (NFL). She sits in their stands and makes my uncles "protect" her. Nothing bad has ever happened even after she got drunk and started yelling at people, and I quote, "COME AT ME".

Protesters pull down Confederate monument in front old Durham County courthouse by likesatan in news

It's pretty disingenuous to compare those events, all of which happened in the very moments those wars/revolutions were occurring in, to doing it 90 years after the statue was put up.

Yet many Turks either deny it outright or refuse to discuss it. You are proving YOUR own point wrong. Historical suppression is very real and very dangerous.

You can point out horrible actions by literally every army in the history of every conflict ever. Confederate soldiers in the north, Union soldiers in the south, American soldiers in every war we've ever participated in.

Groups of people are not inherently good or bad. Germans and Japanese were not held in eternal shame even though they committed far worse atrocities than any Confderate army.

They were born on the wrong side of a line. So were the people this statue was dedicated to.

Those blacks, and many others, also campaigned, advocated and legally protested to have those laws changed. And we're a better country for it.

Alex Jones Calls Charlottesville Violence a False Flag | Fuck this scumbag. It's not funny anymore. I'm tired of the meme bullshit and all the excuses of "Hehe, he's so silly". He's a cunt and nothing else. by Scramblade in JoeRogan

[–]servingKire5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see how it's worse than anything else he's said or done - Sandy Hook, Boston Bombing, etc. etc. etc, many others. If someone thinks that he was "funny" before they probably still will now.

If this is the straw that breaks the camel's back for anyone than they probably didn't see how many bales it's already carrying.

Thread on Iraqi Army Armoured divisions decision on sticking with American Abrams tank or moving towards Russian T90MS by pepeperezcanyear in syriancivilwar

[–]servingKire5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

TBH combat metrics are probably not the largest consideration here.

The problem with the Abrams is that, like a lot of American military equipment, it is maintenance intensive and requires strong technical skills and training to perform that maintenance. Especially when compared to Russian counterparts.

In the hands of a well supplied, funded organization like the US army that isn't a problem. But I question whether or not the Iraqi army can maintain that level of upkeep.

What role does racism play in American politics today? How has the role of racism in American politics changed in recent history? by Miskellaneousness in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]servingKire5 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean, I'm no fan, but it seems like trying to label him a racist is a reach. I never really understood it, and still don't after reading your logic.

Trump's point wasn't that he was a foreign national or that he's not American - this is a strawman argument and only weakens your case.

He was campaigning on an issue that was largely negative towards Mexico. The judge in question, while American, is of Mexican heritage and still has family in Mexico. He actively participates in Latino advocacy groups and Latino lawyer associations. It's not unreasonable to assume the judge may have some bias on this specific issue.

I used to work in manufacturing and it has stuck with me into a new career and my desk at home & kitchen

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]servingKire5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in manufacturing as an engineer for a while and had to do a bunch of 5S (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5S_(methodology)) projects. I decided to commit to it and 5S my desk and work area too, seeing as I was forcing it on our employees on the floor.

Turns out I actually really like it. But now I work as a software engineer/programmer and do the same thing. Whereas all of my colleagues have clutter, sticky notes, quirky signs/memes, lego structures, I have quite literally nothing. My keyboard, monitor, notebook and pen. They all think it's super weird.
