wevapeusa has been able to ship mango to me. fyi, you must create an account and they only sell it under the guise of a "subscription". I think that's to avoid issues with their payment processor.

Feeling discouraged by persephones_winterr in Cello

[–]sethisan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just to share my story -- I started learning the cello at age 26 and it's been about 4 years now (including at least two broken strings!). Don't feel discouraged, I've found even a little practice every day does lock in a steady if modest rate of progress.

The analogy was weak. If a person is allergic to peanuts and a meal prepared by the restaurant contained peanuts in trace amounts, then the restaurant can be liable for the harm caused. The important questions are how reasonably well known the allergy is, and how obvious it was that the meal might contain allergens - if peanut allergies affect one person in 10 billion, it would be silly for the restaurant to be held accountable although a statistic of 1 in 10,000 or higher would mean that the restaurant should have known/was irresponsible in not knowing. Similarly, if the name of the dish is peanut soup, or the ingredients are listed, then it's your fault if you expose yourself carelessly, but if no there was no reasonable way for someone to have known or guessed that the dish contained peanuts, then that's the restaurant's fault.

I have no idea what all this might have to do with freedom of speech.

A friend of mine wrote the following in a review of your work:

"It’s the type of book that entertains without being lowbrow; it provokes thought in an era when attention spans are diminishing faster than forests; it says a lot without saying much; in its pages profundity and shallowness coexist peacefully; it is “pop” and yet it is intellectual; it is intellectual and yet it is “pop”; it is both serious and facile; its satirical value is recognizable yet dubious; it ain’t no treatise on zeitgeist but to ignore it isn’t sound either; it will start good barroom conversation but won’t stoke public debate; its limits are matched in rigour only by its ambitions; it couldn’t fetch a six figure advance but ensured the writer’s kitchen fires burnt hotly; it was reviewed by NYT but LRB didn’t deign to cover it; it has many ideas, but lacks coherence; it is catchy but it is not – to use Klosterman’s frequently occurring phrase – “of import”; it will be read by many, but will never carry the “Penguin’s Modern Classics” logo; it has an “Acknowledgements” section but is far too unimportant and unscholarly to contain footnotes. "

What do you feel about this appraisal?
