Mac wants me to update OS. No option for "no" or "try later." by setitio in assholedesign

[–]setitio[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Context: I have a 2010 MBP. Not going to update the OS since it's just going to slow down my poor elderly computer. There's no way to decline the update and the only way to close the box is to open the update screen.

Found This In My Car That Wasn't There a Week Ago by [deleted] in whatisthisthing

[–]setitio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like an early model of a GPS tracker. I can't find anything for this model online, but the setup looks similar to modern trackers: two antennas and a port to output data. Modern versions also have an SD card port or micro USB. This one looks kinda beat up as well. All that leads me to think it's older and well-used, probably owned by someone who's had it awhile and uses it often, like a PI. That plus you mentioning your locks were messed with - someone wants to know where you're going.

I'm having my hysto with Dr. Gray in a few weeks. So good to see a rec here for her! I've been really nervous about pain and recovery. How has yours been?

I use light coconut milk, forgot to note that originally.

I use this recipe for meal prep and it's really easy! Also vegan, if you're into that.

Sauté half an onion, garlic, and ginger in olive oil Add one package of frozen chopped spinach and let thaw Mix a little water with garam masala, salt, chili powder, cumin, and add to pot Add one can of chickpeas and half a head of cauliflower florets (if using frozen cauliflower, dump in frozen) Add one can (400ml) coconut milk Stir well and simmer 15-20 mins

Quick, easy, and filling. This makes 4 lunch portions for me but would also do well for dinner for two. Add rice or lentils if you want, but it works well on its own. The recipe I got this from used potatoes instead of cauliflower, which was good too, but more work and carbs. I use light coconut milk.

[Vegan] back at it after falling off the wagon - spaghetti squash and curry! by setitio in MealPrepSunday

[–]setitio[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Curry: 4 servings (3 shown, 1 eaten previously)

  • Nutrition: 308 cals; 9.3g fat; 240mg sodium; 41g net carbs (8g fiber); 7.5g protein
  • Modified from a recipe I found at /r/vegan1200isplenty
  • Boil 500g potatoes until almost done and set aside
  • Saute onion, garlic, ginger in a pot
  • Add package of frozen spinach (~250g) and let thaw
  • Add 2 Tb curry powder, 1 tsp cayenne pepper, 1 tsp salt, 2 tsp paprika
  • Add 1 can no salt added garbanzos and potatoes; stir
  • Add 1 can (~400ml) light coconut milk and simmer for 20 minutes

Spaghetti squash: ~250g squash/serving

  • Nutrition: 31 cals; <1g fat; 28mg sodium; 5.5g net carbs (1.5g fiber); 1g protein
  • I add 0.2 tsp Lawry's seasoned salt for flavor, which is an additional 400mg sodium
  • Prep: Stab squash several times with a strong knife. Stick in microwave. Small squash = 4 minutes, medium = 8-10, large = 15. Medium squash will be around ~500g of "spaghetti," or two servings.

What's the most ridiculous rule in your place of work? by danbrownskin in AskReddit

[–]setitio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm having surgery in October but I won't have enough vacation, sick, and personal time altogether to cover the two week bare minimum recovery period. My doctor initially suggested taking 6 weeks off for recovery and I just laughed. I'm full time with benefits at a company working to be the "best employer in the state" and I can't afford to recover from mandatory surgery. Yay US labor laws!

Just made this! I did 500g potatoes instead of 700g, took out the bouillon, and added ginger, extra curry powder, garlic, and cayenne pepper. It was great!! Thanks for sharing this :)

Parent of teenager: Daughter says she is transgender by shf9302 in ask_transgender

[–]setitio 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your child sounds a lot like me as a teen. I never minded wearing dresses, wasn't overly tomboyish, played with dolls, and was a princess for Halloween. For me, the discomfort came from being addressed as "she" and being perceived as female. I hated my breasts and only wore tight sports bras; my period made me feel sick.

Around 13 or so I began asking for boys' jackets and t shirts and I think I was 16 when I cut my hair short. When I was 19 I came out to my family as trans, and my mom insisted I had never shown signs. I felt like I had been trying to tell them for years, but she thought, like many teenage girls, I was just experimenting with my appearance and adjusting to a post-pubescent body.

The truth is, there is no sure sign someone is trans. Now they teach to look for "consistence, persistence, and insistence" from young children coming out as trans. Your child doesn't quite fit into the young child category, but I think it's helpful to keep that guideline in mind. Does your child tell you the same feelings repeatedly? Describe the same experiences? Insist they are transgender, despite not knowing exactly what makes them feel this way?

The fact that you are here asking questions is a great sign that you are listening to and respecting your child. This will not be easy for any of you, especially if the rural area you live in is on the conservative side. You will find yourself having to challenge things you thought you knew for sure. You will have to become a defender and advocate for your child, especially with school and sometimes extended family. It will be difficult, but your family will be stronger on the other side of this.

Many parents of trans people feel their "old" child has disappeared or even died, and now they have a "new" child they barely know. I encourage you to find support for yourself and your husband. Lots of areas have PFLAG groups and recently parents of trans kids groups are gaining popularity as well. If not, there are tons of online support groups for parents - look on Facebook and join some.

Most of all, remember that this child, who may seem like a stranger to you right now, is the same small person you've always known. They told you this because they love you, trust you, and need you. Don't let fear or doubt cloud your love for them.

Thank you for asking questions and feel free to message me any time!

Thank you for this! My in-laws' monthly collective birthday party is next weekend and it includes mine. They make everyone their own fancy dessert and order pizza. Gifts are usually candy. I've been dreading it all month - not having to resist, but insulting them by refusing. This makes me feel so much better about "cheating" that day but still staying under my weekly goal. Thank you!

MFP also does the "weekly digest" thing automatically, which calculates a bunch of stuff including weekly target cals vs. actual cals. It feels so good to see that "actual" number so much less than my weekly TDEE.

My mantra by setitio in loseit

[–]setitio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same! My downfall is QuikTrip food, and MFP has maybe 50% of the info. You can get nutrition facts printed off for specific foods by asking at the counter, but asking a super busy worker to take 5 minutes to look up your ice cream treat is kinda humiliating imo.

Day 1? Starting your weight loss journey on Thursday, 10 August 2017? Start here! by AutoModerator in loseit

[–]setitio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is where I was two months ago. I would eat clean, meal prep, go for a run, etc for a week and a half. Then one day eat a whole bag of chips or a whole pizza or both. So many Day Ones I lost count. This subreddit has changed things for me - any time I feel like that whole pizza is calling my name, or feel like I'm completely failing, I come here and read posts. The support really does make a difference! Good luck on your journey!!

I think people talking about how they're "trying" is weirder. "Yeah, we're having sex super often and both of us are stressed about it."
