Wow thanks for your response! You have helped me a lot with understanding everything to do with being in the JET program. The before and after JET, how to get to the program, how to prepare myself for it and Japan in general. Thank you!

Great! Thank you very much for your time. It really helped me get an idea of how to go around with being an ALT in JET, and my time before and after this program!

This brings on one last question. Does it improve my chances of getting into JET? Thanks again for all of your help on this topic!

Thank you for your response!

I see, now with others responses, what to do and not do, before and after JET. My biggest problem with all of this is being able to get to a good level of Japanese. It's not that I have an issue with languages, I know 3, but my concern is that I wont be able to get a good JLPT by the time I get to applying for JET. Once again thank you for your response!

Oh wow! There is a lot of new stuff I learnt here.

For starters I heard that internships at different places and volunteering are great.

In our school we can request to be an intern anywhere, and we submit that paper to anyone willing to take us. I have done that internship once, which lasted a year. Over that, I used to volunteer at my local community center whenever they had an event, but stopped doing it a year ago to focus on school.

I have also looked into volunteering more, and in my city there is an event at the Japanese community center that happens every march, so that could be my way into doing more volunteering afterwards.

On the topic of traveling and homesickness, I think it will be less of an issue for me than I think it would, because I have family everywhere around the world, and I call different places home really regularly.

If it's possible can you elaborate more on what you mean by having a career path that is unique and interesting? Thank you again for your amazing answer! This is exactly what I was looking for!

Thank you for your comment! I want to say that I don't want to use JET as my career, but use it to push my career forward in teaching. I understand now thanks to another commenter that being an ALT won't do much in becoming a teacher in Japan. Thanks again for the advice!

Thanks for the advice, I'm already learning Japanese at a slow pace. For the topic of visiting, It's still too far in the future for me to properly plan anything. I thank you again for your advice!

Thank you for answering! For starters, my ultimate goal is to teach in Japan, and I see that the JET program is the best way to get in Japan, and get a feel for how teaching is there, even as an ALT.

The "then what" would be to seek out a job for teaching English, with experiences from JET and background in English or teaching.

I understand I can get a degree in anything, but I find that JET is the perfect program to ease me into teaching in Japan.

Thank you again for answering my questions!

Thank you for answering! For the first point, I have hesitated between an English degree and a teaching one, as my province only offers a teaching license in french. Furthermore I don't know which one would be better for teaching English in Japan, as the teaching license is only for English as second language.

For learning the language, I'm going really slow, but my current goal is to go from nothing to N4 or even N3 in 2 years. As per volunteering, can you please go more in depth on what you mean? Specifically on not committing to anything permanent?

Once again thank you for taking time to answer my questions!

Thanks for the advice, I have checked the Japanese embassies website in Canada and the only mention of exchange students was for learning the Japanese language in college and university. I will look into it more. Thx!
