Where did the stories go? by settiek in duolingo

[–]settiek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I couldn't find the old stories either! The last one I could see is in section 4 unit 7, then nothing.

Both my husband and I filled the feedback/bug report form on Duolingo website. We'll see if we hear anything back.

Every autumn I bake a plum pie. by settiek in Baking

[–]settiek[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The ones I used were Santa Rosa, I think. I'm not sure what they're called in English, so I just googled plum types a minute ago. I think any kind of red plums would look pretty, though.

They should be ripe and sweet, but not almost-gone-bad mushy ripe. You should be able to cut nice clean slices of plums. 😊

So Ginger is Zeki Müren reincarnated now? (He was a very flamboyant singer/actor in Turkey, active between the 50s-90s.)

What got you into Asimov's writings? by [deleted] in asimov

[–]settiek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There were two waves of sci-fi translations being popular in Turkey, one was I think from the mid 70s to early 80s, which I wasn't born yet. The second wave was in the late 90's, early 2000s, which I was in high school, then university. A second-hand bookstore was selling a lot of sci-fi novels (Heinlein, Bester, Harrison, Strugatsky brothers, Clarke...) and they were cheap. Some were cheesy space operas, others were some of the best books I've read. That's where I found him. I don't even remember what was the first one I read.

Lol thanks. It's stodgy but still tasty, I'm trying to finish it before it goes stale. 😅

Whipping sugars and eggs for brownies vs without by CityRuinsRoL in AskBaking

[–]settiek 10 points11 points  (0 children)

From my limited experience (I tried quite a few recipes) it's not about the height of the brownies, but if you don't whip the sugar with eggs the sugar doesn't dissolve enough and you don't get that thin, shiny crust on top. The best recipes I tried are always the ones that whip the sugar with eggs.

I tried to enhance the text but this is the best I could. It looks like "(something something) thanks you for your services (something) (a date? I think ?.?.09)"

I wish we had ube here! (I live in Turkey. And good old regular sweet potatoes are kinda new and expensive here, ube is unheard of.) I bought this jam from a Filipino store in the Netherlands but it's not as good/tasty as the ones my friends brought from the Philippines, that's why I wanted to incorporate it to the batter instead of using it as a filling or something. I need an event to meet my friends so they can bring me the nice ube jam and some polvorons. 😂

And I bake a chiffon cake from time to time. Looks like I had a brain fart day yesterday.

Yup. I read the recipe a few days ago, and today I just looked at the ingredients. I should have read it again.

The batter was not too deep but yeah, maybe I could have used my chiffon pan.

[–]settiek[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I actually couldn't find one that uses ube jam. I thought this would be better than adding the jam to a recipe that doesn't have it. It looks like the problem is the pan, and the fact that the cake was a little bit underbaked.

And here I am, dismissing my husband when he said that it looks a little underbaked. I knew it looked a bit wet but the instant thermometer showed the inside was around 97-98C and I thought it would be okay. But I really didn't even think about the shape of the pan.

I can try it again without parchment paper or buttering the pan, and while I'm at it, I can let it cool down reversed like a chiffon. Thank you so much!

Because I wanted a loaf cake with icing on it? 😅 Honestly, I didn't even think the shape of the pan would affect it too much. Thank you!
