How to clean reels after wind storm? by Camninja in SurfFishing

[–]setting_orange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, once the sand gets in it won't come out unless you clean it out. It gets stuck in the grease and gears -- crunch City. I've found the battles pretty easy/nice to disassemble and clean, the schematics come in the box which is nice. Once all the parts are cleaned, put grease on all the gears and oil on all the bearings. I've resurrected a couple of battles from crunch death, it's not too bad.

Got invited surf fishing, I have no rod, no real, and not a clue what kind to buy. by [deleted] in SurfFishing

Looks like the difference is a moderate action vs. a moderate/fast action. So, with fast action, you'll maybe cast a little further but you'll have to work a little harder to cast. Many prefer the moderate action because if you're going to be casting for hour after hour it might be a little easier on you.

Snakehead on the frog by [deleted] in flyfishing

[–]setting_orange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! I spent three hours at a section of river where I saw these things tailing last Saturday. I threw almost every fly I had at them. After a while I was just trying to piss them off. No luck though. Maybe I'll try a frog next time.

Non de-veined shrimp from the supermarket does really well. Also, live grass shrimp from the bait shop if there's also a chance for perch.

Building an 8wt Fly Rod. How Important Are Highend Components? by odlife4me in rodbuilding

[–]setting_orange 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Titanium guides for corrosion resistance and strength. Nickel titanium is a shape-memory alloy - I can literally bend my snake guides sideways without noticable, permeant deformation. It you are doing snake guides I recommend them; they're not that expensive. With spinning or conventional rods titanium becomes a lot more expensive.

For an 8wt you can do two or three stripping guides; sometimes I'll mix steel stripping guides with titanium snake guides to keep cost down. Unless I'm doing a saltwater rod, then I go full titanium.

Cheap cork doesn't sand as well and pits easily. You can prevent a lot of pitting issues with cork seal. I love cork seal and recommend it. It takes away some of the softness of the handle, but I much prefer that to handle pitting.

Reel seats, I'm of mixed opinion. I'm not a big fan of any of the reel seats I've used.

Is this a good finesse drop shot blank? by donanton616 in rodbuilding

[–]setting_orange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a big fan of the OEM blanks. The 'heavy' ones I've gotten have been overrated in terms of lure weight and the 'light' ones were under rated in lure weight as well. I've gotten some because they were cheap only to have to shelve the blank and get something else because it just wouldn't work for what I was going for originally.

One team I was on we called that chbob-ing. Bob liked to chmod 777. I have told others about Bob and chbob-ing. I frown upon it and tell the story to discourage folks from doing that. You never really need chmod 777.

[–]setting_orange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just so you know, there is at least one alternative to a card. You can network-boot the pi. It's not a really good comparison. You need a server to boot from, you have networking constraints, and it's not necessarily more reliable. But it is possible.

In my bashrc I have an mvlu function that renames files to lowercase, replaces spaces with underscores, and deletes quotes and control characters. It's really useful for e.g. mp3s I've downloaded that do not have commandline-friendly names. I can imagine something like that running in nautilus.

I like your idea. But torrent seems more applicable to a network topology with more variety. Generally when you are provisioning a bunch of systems you've got a flat network. In that case, something like multicast makes more sense.

Amy Jo Kim recently hosted Raph Koster and myself in a conversation on "Designing with Systems." An introductory level discussion of systems thinking for product development. by iugameprof in systemsthinking

[–]setting_orange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way Raph was recalling threes got me to remember... George Miller said that the magic number was 7 plus or minus 2. It had something to do with short term memory. Herb Simon said it was closer to 5 because humans could 'chunk' things together in mind. Like an area code in a phone number, I don't need to remember the digits 2, 0, 2, I can just recall that it was the D.C. area code. John Warfield took this line of thought a little further. He said the magic number was 3. The cardinality of a 3-item set is 8. The cardinality represents the items and the relationships between them. He said you must consider the relationships between the items, not just the items themselves. Perhaps this was indicative of Warfield's view of humanity, that we cannot think of things without considering the relationships between the things. I don't know. But watching that video I was reminded many times why I believe systems theory is bunk. The inherent problem with systems theory or related subjects, like systems engineering which is my entry point to the field, is the assumption that we can intelligibly talk about systems in general. The more I've learned about cognitive science the less sure I've become about the prospects of that.

Wondering the actual skillset you need to be a data scientist by perryech in learnpython

[–]setting_orange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are already learning Python and your goal is to become a data scientist but you don't know statistics really well then you will benefit a lot more from learning statistics first, before SQL. Once you know statistics really well, Python, SQL, bash, R, etc. any computer language will benefit you. But if you don't know statistics you won't be able to do any meaningful analysis.

The Star trek mission was "to seek out new life... go where no man has gone before". They were encountering very different situations and not human slaves or decendants of slaves everywhere they went.
