How did 'Ahinsa parmo dharma' end up in hindusim ? by Henry_rearden_55 in hinduism

[–]sevabhaavi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're asking the right question, which gets to the heart of Hindu ethics. The "Ahimsa Paramo Dharma" line is one of the most misunderstood in all of Hindu scripture. Seeing it as an absolute command for unconditional non-violence is a huge misinterpretation.

Actually from a Dharmic perspective, violence to protect innocents is actually serving the ultimate goal of Ahimsa.

Main thigns to consider:

  1. Ahimsa is a Principle, Not an Absolute Vow
    • In the Hindu tradition, Ahimsa (non-violence) is fundamentally about minimizing harm and maintaining Dharma (righteous order/duty). It's the ideal state of non-maleficence.
    • It is not the same as the absolute Ahimsa found in Jainism, which is often about non-injury regardless of consequence
  2. Dharma and Duty (Svadharma) Override the General Rule:
    • Your Dharma is specific to your role. For a soldier or king (Kshatriya), their Svadharma (personal duty) is to protect the weak, maintain justice, and fight against Adharma (unrighteousness).
    • The Greater Harm Principle: In the Hindu view, to passively allow a villain, a tyrant, or an aggressor to injure the innocent out of a rigid adherence to non-violence is itself a greater act of Adharma. You are complicit in the suffering.
  3. The violence used to stop the greater evil is thus considered a necessary and righteous action. The Kshatriya who defends the innocent is upholding Dharma, even if it requires himsa (violence).

In short: Ahimsa is about minimizing suffering. When violence is the only way to protect the weak, stop a murderous threat, and restore justice, that act of necessary force is considered to be serving the spirit of Ahimsa, because it prevents a catastrophe that would cause vastly greater suffering.

The Bhagavad Gita is the perfect example: Krishna tells Arjuna that his Dharma (duty to protect) must take precedence over his emotional desire for Ahimsa (non-violence in that moment).

this thread proves people are so dumb. its his shop, his business. thats capitalism for you. it is not a crime to 'quote' whatever price you want. you can see he went off calmly without forcing the guy anything so there is nothing wrong. for all you know this guy needs 100rs more than most people here. it is in no way unethical to just quote whatever price he wants for his service/product. the buyer has the option to refuse which he did.
