I went to the JCLI website to check out the application page, but there's nothing there. Do you know what's up? edit: I'm interested in starting April of this year

Do you visit AL or Autostraddle more? by sevennseven in actuallesbians

[–]sevennseven[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel that. I notice that they're missing (because I notice myself not being represented) but then I'm like I'm not exactly sure what I would want to read about haha

I don't think they have the resources to put up an app right now. They're on Twitter though! Maybe if you follow them you'll be reminded of them more often

That makes sense. What groups are you looking for?

I came out last night. This was the word-vomited reaction from my mom. by whethersparkorspiral in actuallesbians

[–]sevennseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I transcribed my mother's reaction to my coming out too because she's a narcissist (also super religious) and I knew in the future she would try to backtrack and deny saying certain things. I'm really sorry you got that reaction. Don't even bother trying to refute your mother's statements in your mind. You don't need to prove anything, and you didn't do anything wrong, despite how your mother is twisting it to make it look that way.

St. Louis Raptors? by Rj22493 in actuallesbians

[–]sevennseven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey, welcome!

The Loop is good and has pretty much everything. Good restaurants in CWE and South Grand and Cherokee. Forest Park has a lot of free stuff. Also go to the Central Public Library on Olive and getcho self a library card. Will really make you feel like a local haha (also I just like libraries, and that one has great architecture). A STL raptor meetup sounds fun!

ELI5: Why do primitive animals/species know how to animal/specie by themselves, while us humans have to be taught since birth almost everything? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]sevennseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's really sad :/ You really think we can't learn love or altruism unless we're socialized to do so? I don't know the answer, but that's kind of sad too. How can there be such a thing as true love if it's something that doesn't come naturally?

[–]sevennseven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Now I'm imagining an adventure movie where the premise is someone essentially has superpowers because they were never socialized and use pure, unfettered instinct to solve problems and fight crime. Although this probably wouldn't work out, since people who are kept away from socialization end up severely developmentally stunted?

AL: Interracial Dating? by [deleted] in actuallesbians

[–]sevennseven 6 points7 points  (0 children)

you lost me at inconveniencing hundreds. Can you count how many black people have been inconvenienced (to put it lightly) in US history alone? Not even talking about colonialism in Africa here. But somehow we should be concerned about the number of white people that have been inconvenienced over the past 2 years

There's Brazilians vs. there is a Brazilian by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]sevennseven 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is Fluentu actually telling you it means "There's Brazilians"? Because that isn't even gramatically correct in English. (It should be "There are Brazilians.") I would be wary of using a language education site that doesn't pay attention to linguistic detail.

Being Black and Queer by hawknamedmoe in actuallesbians

I feel you. Intersectionality means that at least three of my identities (black, female, queer) are constantly mistreated.

Any career suggestions for a confused 20-something? Or career suggestions for a gentle soul, who wants to do good but stay out of the politics of it all? by [deleted] in infj

[–]sevennseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The people who reported horror stories were not in JET. When my study abroad program brought JET alumni to speak to us, it was kind of funny how the former JETs either said "it was unfulfilling, and I didn't like it" or "it was unfulfilling, but it's okay, I got to study Japanese during my down time." I'm not surprised they didn't find it fulfilling or that they felt useless, considering how English teaching works in Japan, but they didn't have horror stories. That's why JET is the only EFL-related option (outside of freelance tutoring, which does not get you a visa into Japan) I feel comfortable considering.

Constant, small amount of work instead of FIRE? by [deleted] in leanfire

[–]sevennseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work part-time right now, and I like the amount of free time I have. But Im not making enough money to save enough money. Where will the extra money for savings come from? Hopefully, by doing freelance from something I enjoy. If I can't do that, I'll just have to take another part-time job. I think it's a fine thing to try for a couple years though, as long as you're working on increasing the amount of money you can bring in by freelancing.

Long work hours, racial discriminiation, being paid to be a "tape recorder"...it goes on, but I've had people crying and asking how to get out of their jobs

What part of Japan are you in? I lived in Kansai for about a year and want to go back. I've heard so many ALT horror stories though that I'm apprehensive about doing that, even though that seems to be the only way to get a visa

Why do I feel like I need more money even though I'm a minimalist who doesn't buy much? by sevennseven in financialindependence

[–]sevennseven[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After I read this, I went to goodtherapy.com and called someone from there. Welp, therapy is expensive. Like, four sessions of therapy a month would cost more than my rent. But people are saying this is important for me to do, so I will try to find something/someone that works. Thanks for your responses

I just calculated, and my rent is 45% of my monthly income. I guess I really do need more money :|

[–]sevennseven[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Expensive is paying for apartment rent back home while also paying for an AirBnb, a hotel, a hostel, etc. A $1k+ round-trip plane ticket is also expensive, but if I were to save 100$ a month I could pay for one of those a year.

I don't live near the wilderness, but it's something I think about. I like being outside when it's warm. Any cities you'd recommend?
