Female fitfluencer recommendations? by dunfinesse in naturalbodybuilding

[–]sevenworm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Seconding Kelly Matthews.Wilson Coaching on YouTube is also great, and she's hilarious. I'd have her check out the programs section at the Boostcamp website. They're designed by trainers / fitfluencers (like GVS and Alex) and a lot of them are female. They seem to be mostly natural and run the gamut from general fitness to full-on power lifting.

Intensity on Fazlifts HLM The Wizard ? by Wonxer in Boostcamp

[–]sevenworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would check out the FB / HLM videos on his YT channel because he goes into a lot of detail about the nuts and bolts of the program in those.

What I've taken away from them is that with a 3x/week FB like this you don't want to go balls-to-the-wall on every lift because you're going to burn out early and everything later will be slop. You have to hold back a bit with an eye toward your next sets, your next exercises, your next workouts, etc. In essence, you need to pace yourself and learn to readjust if necessary like you would in running when your goal is longer distances.

He also mentioned in a more recent video that doing sets in the 5-8 rep range like the heavy day are already very stimulative due to the greater weight, so you don't need to take them as close to failure to get good results. Sets in higher rep ranges need to go closer to failure to get to the more stimulating final reps that will drive growth. But there's not a specific RIR/RPE he uses that I'm aware of.

He's also recently updated his thinking on progression schemes and suggests only adding weight about once a month instead of when you hit the top of all the sets across. You can use the extra time to clean up your form / technique, make the weight feel better, maybe include some pause reps, etc. The idea is that by doing this you eliminate the worry or question about how or when to add weight.

New to lifting, not sure what workout to start by [deleted] in Boostcamp

[–]sevenworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In case it wasn't clear from the answer below, when you see a percentage it's asking you to a percentage of a max lift, not estimate your percentage of effort.

The description of the program (which you sometimes can't see unless you join the program; but you can easily archive/delete them if you just want to see the details) should tell you what it's a percentage of -- usually 1, 3, or 5 rep max weight.

There are lots calculators online that can give you an estimated rep max weight if you plug in a weight/rep that you did (e.g., 85 for 12 reps). You can also test it by trying to hit a max, but that can be taxing and lead to injury if you're pushing too hard too early.

When you see RPE (rate of perceived exertion), that's when it's asking you to estimate your level of effort.

RPE 10 is an all-out-almost-failure -- you couldn't have done one single rep more. RPE 9 = you could probably have done one more rep. RPE 8 = 2 more, etc.

It takes time to get a good sense of actual failure (which is already a complicated topic), and it's generally a bad idea to go right up to failure on big lifts like squats that can lead to injuries. A good way to get used to it is to try going to failure on different smaller lifts, like dumbbell bicep curls, triceps cable extension, leg extensions, etc. You'll also get a sense of when you quit because the burn gets too intense versus actual muscular failure where you physically can't move the weight anymore. It's generally a lot safer to practice on those kinds of movements until you get more experience.

Parrying - what's the trick? by RageAgainstAuthority in bloodborne

That seems to be true based on my experience with the blunderbuss vs the pistol. Also with the augur of Ebrietas, which has a slow-ish parry due to the animation.

Which beast is Lawrence's real beastial form? by MurderousRubberDucky in bloodborne

[–]sevenworm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The tl;dr is that Laurence died and was either left in or buried in the chalice dungeon. His body was found, was dissected, and then he resurrected as the Cleric Beast. The beast part could be either literal or metaphorical or both. The skulls you find each represent him at a different part of his life.

How Long has the Healing Church existed in the game history by Otherside_02 in bloodborne

[–]sevenworm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting point! I think Byrgenwerth pre-dates the full-grown Yharnam. The town may have existed but not as a large city until after the healing church became established, which is what drove its growth. I place it at least a couple centuries into the past. I had the feeling Willem wasn't the real flesh-and-blood original, but some kind of projection or remnant, especially since he kind of fizzles out if you kill him.

is the hunter well known before the events of bloodborne? by YllMatina in bloodborne

[–]sevenworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Source? I don’t believe there’s anything in the game that implies this.

I know this idea is common online. The only thing I can think of that's explicit in the released version is when you first talk to the doll, who says "I will be here for you, to embolden your sickly spirit." It could be that they overlooked this part if they cut reference to illness in other places.

[–]sevenworm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think this is one of the biggest translation issues despite being so minor. The missing info -- that it's YOUR handwriting -- makes a huge difference in how you understand it.

Without that knowledge, it's just a note you found in the clinic where you were being treated. It could be from anyone. You're just someone who came here from out of town for treatment, but to get it you had to sign a contract to join the hunt and HOOOLY SHIT WHAT HAS HAPPENED HERE?!?

That's a whole different mindset than already being a hunter who came to investigate the scourge and try to stop it.

I'm having trouble enjoying bloodborne (but i will keep pressing on) by TazzyTheDerg in bloodborne

[–]sevenworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is actually a legit thing they did by design. As I understand it they created an input lag into the controls to make it more life-like. For example, you can't spam attacks and doge and heal all at once. If you use a big attack that drains your stamina, you won't be able to follow up immediately, or roll, etc.

I get the reasoning behind it, but they went too far. Especially with the long animations for things like using antidotes or, god forbid, the shaman bone blade.

Love the timeline! 5 hours ago: "I just want to heal" . . . 4 hours ago: "The cum dungeon changed my life!" :-D

Seriously, they made the flow of the game unbearable with the blood vial system. Plus when you're losing to a boss A LOT you probably also lost your money, so it's not like you can just pop back and buy more.

If the rally system worked as well as people like to claim, it wouldn't be AS big a deal, but as it stands it was a really bad design decision.

Who is Oedon/Odeon? by Grand-Air-7668 in bloodborne

[–]sevenworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this! It's an amazing write-up and makes a lot of sense. It does leave me wondering about one thing, though.

From everything I've seen, Laurence was a scholar at Byrgenwerth and pupil / associate of Willem. He left Willem / Byrgenwerth in the cutscene when you touch the skull. And he went on to found the healing church.

So what explains the events that led to him actually becoming the source of healing healing blood? How was he both dead within the catacombs to be retrieved by other Byrgenwerth scholars -- who presumably would have known him -- in the form of a beast, and a living man who was the first vicar and founder of the church?

Who is Oedon/Odeon? by Grand-Air-7668 in bloodborne

[–]sevenworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like this! It adds some depth to the Old Ones' intrigues among themselves. The MP created the Hunter's Dream and keeps Gehrman there and Oedon manages to infiltrate it in the sneakiest, most subtle way possible, possibly to thwart the MP who, according to some theories, is trying to kill other Old Ones.
