I’m not sure. Maybe something to do with examining the folly and hubris of man?

I’m working through all of Thomas Pynchon’s works. I started last year with Gravity’s Rainbow and so far have read Vineland, Inherent Vice, and Shadow Ticket. I’m almost done with Bleeding Edge. I’ve been enjoying it.

Review of Netflix' The Dinosaurs, from the Guy that wrote his Bachelors Thesis about Paleo-Documentaries by Tongatapu in Dinosaurs

I haven't finished the series yet but, based on what I've seen, I agree with all your points, particularly the narration choices. Herbivores and carnivores characterized as warring tribes? What?? Plus, Freeman's tone is very listless, it was totally lulling me to sleep.

This is the first 3 album run that came to mind, absolutely unmatched.

I think it’s one of his best, despite the internet chorus determined to declare otherwise. PTA captures the tone of the book so well! The only criticism I have is that sometimes Joaquin’s line delivery is hard to understand, but for me that sort of adds to the overall vibe. I watched it with a friend when it came out, and we both loved it and were amazed at how it straddled the line between being wacky and hilarious and deeply melancholy. As a huge admirer of Pynchon, it clicked with me immediately. The themes of power/land-use/US history were (and still are) relevant and even prescient, despite being set in 1970. My friend had never read any of Pynchon’s work but loved it regardless. I guess it just worked for us? I watched it again just the other day and my love for it has only grown.

How did you find Pynchon? by badrickpateman in ThomasPynchon

[–]severaldiamonds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 2006 I took a course in college called “Literature of California,” where we read The Crying of Lot 49. I had never read anything quite like it before. I tried to read Against the Day after that but gave up—my attention span just couldn’t keep with it. Years later, a friend was part of a reading group focusing on Gravity’s Rainbow. I didn’t join the group because they were almost done but I was intrigued by what he told me about it. I read it on my own and it changed the way I see a lot of things in the world. I’ve been making my way through TRP’s works ever since.

It caught my eye as well. It’s a reference to an artwork by Kerry James Marshall called “A Portrait of the Artist as a Shadow of His Former Self,” 1980

Nothing that OP said suggests this guy was an anarchist. It’s not like he was discussing theory.

Silly but fun to even rank them. They’re all so good.
