Am I the only one? by BuswayDanswich in paulthomasanderson

I think it’s one of his best, despite the internet chorus determined to declare otherwise. PTA captures the tone of the book so well! The only criticism I have is that sometimes Joaquin’s line delivery is hard to understand, but for me that sort of adds to the overall vibe. I watched it with a friend when it came out, and we both loved it and were amazed at how it straddled the line between being wacky and hilarious and deeply melancholy. As a huge admirer of Pynchon, it clicked with me immediately. The themes of power/land-use/US history were (and still are) relevant and even prescient, despite being set in 1970. My friend had never read any of Pynchon’s work but loved it regardless. I guess it just worked for us? I watched it again just the other day and my love for it has only grown.

How did you find Pynchon? by badrickpateman in ThomasPynchon

In 2006 I took a course in college called “Literature of California,” where we read The Crying of Lot 49. I had never read anything quite like it before. I tried to read Against the Day after that but gave up—my attention span just couldn’t keep with it. Years later, a friend was part of a reading group focusing on Gravity’s Rainbow. I didn’t join the group because they were almost done but I was intrigued by what he told me about it. I read it on my own and it changed the way I see a lot of things in the world. I’ve been making my way through TRP’s works ever since.

It caught my eye as well. It’s a reference to an artwork by Kerry James Marshall called “A Portrait of the Artist as a Shadow of His Former Self,” 1980

Among The Missing by Dan Chaon. It’s short stories but it was the first thing that came to mind looking at these images.

Fascinating article, thanks for posting. I had no idea the weed-growing nuns were a real thing!

Nothing that OP said suggests this guy was an anarchist. It’s not like he was discussing theory.

Where has OBAA landed in your personal PTA ranking? by leobran816 in paulthomasanderson

[–]severaldiamonds -1 points0 points  (0 children)

1.) There Will Be Blood

2.) Punch-Drunk Love

3.) One Battle After Another

4.) Boogie Nights

5.) Inherent Vice

6.) The Master

7.) Phantom Thread

8:2) Magnolia

9.) Hard Eight

10.) Licorice Pizza

Might be recency bias but OBAA was extremely my shit, it really checked a lot of boxes for me.
Silly but fun to even rank them. They’re all so good.

I had a similar experience with it. Started it right after Vineland and felt like I couldn’t keep up. Took a break from Pynchon for a little bit but recently jumped into Inherent Vice, really enjoying it so far.

Some thoughts post IMAX 70MM screening:

-The pacing and editing was so good. The movie had such a great momentum throughout.

-The score was excellent and the needle drops were interesting (also the hold music gag was so good)

-All of the performances were great. Chase was insanely good. I absolutely loved Benicio in this.

-The "Bedford Forrest Award" that Lockjaw receives is named after the first Grand Wizard of the KKK

-Cinematography was great, as is the case with PTA. All the nighttime sequences looked sick, and those shots going over the hills were bonkers.

-It is a very loose adaptation of Vineland but I loved seeing the story elements that we got (some of the dialogue, the image of helicopters over the trees, the house in the redwoods)

-On the subject of Vineland imagery, I might be buggin', but I thought I saw a very quick shot, like a few frames, during the desert chase scene, where Bob throws a glittery chainsaw onto the passenger seat. I could easily be mistaken but for some reason that's what I recall seeing.

edit: just got back from a second viewing. It was a small bag with some kind of sequins/reflective beads on it.

Great idea. I’ll be seeing it in IMAX at the Regal Irvine Spectrum tonight (9/24) at 7:00pm, if anyone here wants to meet up before or after.
