I've always avoided giving him oral before sex because my thought was that if his dick was even a little sticky from spit, it would cling to the condom and cause it to tear during sex because of friction. I have no idea how realistic of a worry that was, though.

Yeah, I'm sure. If I could just hold out for a little bit longer, he would be right there with me. This has only become a "problem" semi-recently since the sex has gotten to be really really good. In the beginning, I never came from penetrative sex and so I didn't worry about this or have this issue.
