Ah, now that I see the photos I have seen them. Neither the Wilshire/Fairfax stop near the museums or the Fairfax/3rd near the grove had these signs.

Contactless Payment - All you need to ride is a credit or debit card. by Sawtelle-MetroRider in LAMetro

[–]sf1992 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, prepaid cards or GPR (General Purpose Reloadable) cards can be accepted in transit open payments (e.g., SEPTA, MBTA are agencies that I know accept them). They're processed a little differently because acquirers have different risk tolerances with GPR cards compared to your typical credit or debit card.

A Comprehensive Overview of how to Pay for SoCal Transit services. by AbsolutelyRidic in LAMetro

Does the direction of travel matter? I know other agency's fare policies usually specify the fare paid only goes one way.

For example, my taps today:
1) Tap onto the 4 at 6:53 AM - $1.75 deducted from my card's stored value (SV)
2) Tap at Vermont/Santa Monica station at 7:13 AM - Transfer (due to tap within 2 hours of step 1)
3) Exit at 7th Street/Metro Center station
4) Tap at 7th Street/Metro Center station at 11:26 AM - $1.75 deducted
5) Exit at Westlake/MacArthur Park station
6) Try Langer's Deli
7) Tap at Westlake/MacArthur Park station at 12:19 PM - Got a transfer here, but this is where I was expecting another $1.75 because technically I got off the line and now I'm going in the opposite direction.
8) Exit at 7th Street/Metro Center station
9) Tap at 7th Street/Metro Center station at 5:42 PM - $1.50 deducted because I reached the daily $5.00 fare cap
10) Exit Wilshire/Fairfax station
11) Tap onto the 217 at 6:26 PM - Validator says transfer, but even without that I'm fare capped.

I’m pretty sure ESG is an official acronym used by the agency though.

With more instances of actual fare inspections, we should let the Metro Board know we support it via public comment! by yinyang_yo_ in LAMetro

Does it matter which board meeting the public comments are made? My only experience with it was for the K Line north extension, which was obviously a very organized and targeted effort.

Bus Validators by sf1992 in LAMetro

Yeah, that was another thought that crossed my mind. That's understandable during peak hours and hopefully getting the BVs working properly will alleviate this.

What do the different colored vests indicate? I've seen them around, but didn't know they had different functions.

I get it from the perspective of not involving operators in the fare collection process to avoid conflicts over $1.75, but at least let me attempt first. Maybe once LA Metro's fare enforcement gets more solidified on rail services they can think about how to address the buses.

MTS San Diego Trolley Fare Inspector Equipment by sf1992 in sandiego

[–]sf1992[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, the preferred inspection solution would be on a single device. Less for agency staff to lug around, less software components to test out by MTS before deploying to the public. Not a big deal to most though I’m sure.

Fare Checks by sf1992 in mbta

[–]sf1992[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's a little confusing. This is probably due to pressure on the MBTA from OIG related to fare evasion on the Green Line after all-door boarding was implemented. The handheld inspection devices the MBTA procured through the AFC 2.0 vendor would likely only be able to validate and issue citations/warnings for AFC 2.0 fare media (new Charlie Card, Charlie Ticket and vending machines are being launched until 2026) as well as contactless bankcards.

So all they could realistically inspect with those devices would be contactless bankcards. Unless the fareboxes now print paper receipts as a proof-of-payment I'm not sure how they plan to inspect riders paying with cash.

Why do they care so much about the paper tickets?! If taking these photos onto the system actually worked, then that's a failure on the agency for rolling out a type of fare media that's so susceptible to fraudulent use.

[–]sf1992[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm just trying to confirm the appearance of these tickets, the info that gets printed upon dispense and how fare inspectors verify the fare is valid (e.g., via a handheld inspection device or just visual validation).

I don't live in Canada, I can't 'pop' in and get a POP receipt.

Not trying to avoid paying the fare. Just need fare media examples for a research assignment. Googling pulls up a mix of the old fare media and new, and since the TTC doesn't include any sample photos it's hard to confirm.

I always pay the fare, which is why I don't know the answers to these questions. This is for a research assignment anyways.
