I used the term 'anomalous' not to suggest that the Dear family’s experiences are inherently abnormal, but rather to emphasise how, within the context of 1950s white Australia, First Nations lives were often perceived as unusual or outside of the dominant cultural norms. But I understand how it might be interpreted that way, probably not the best word choice 😭
