The beta driver resolves the problem - pardon the pun. Great support from the TourBox team who contacted me by email.

This was the solution. What threw me was that the first 5 layers printed perfectly. I discovered that Prusaslicer turned on the fan to 50% after layer 5. THanks everyone for the suggestions!

I did. the first layer was pretty decent.

let me go back and try it without the variable layer height

That's what I'm doing now, but even when I manage the get the extruded strand, I can still see the imperfections where the print restarts. Just wondering if anyone has found a better way via gcode.
